Is my "friend" being a douche? Is my "friend" being a douche?

Before I get asked if I am being a "troll again" I think I should state that I am genuinely seeking some advice here. I know I am not always the most rational person in the world so I thought I would see what some of you thought.

A lifelong friend and I had a major falling out on Super Bowl Sunday last year (Niners-Ravens). We almost got into a fight, he was really drunk, and to make a long story short I pretty much told him to f off. We were like brothers for a very long time.

A few weeks ago I sent him an email basically saying I think we should be friends again (his 1 year old brother who I was also best friends with died a few years ago) and I told him it was tragic enough we lost him etc...

Anyway here was his responses.

Hey Dude,

I'm really sorry to hear you hit some low points with regards to drug abuse, and appreciate you sharing that with me.

I also am sorry for the things i said, that was not right, no matter how much anger or booze i had in mr, it wasn't right to say, and for that i am sorry.

I am happy to hear you are clean from those Rx's, and that is XXXXXXX awesome about the job.

At some point i think it would make sense to meet at a neutral place and talk, but im not sure i am ready for that. I do appreciate you extending the olive branch, and ideally at some point in the future i'd love to see us become friends again. I'm just not sure that time is now.

Thanks for the congrats on the child. We had our son on Jan 11, 2014 and named him xxxxx.

Anyways man, again it's great to hear you are doing so well.

Talk to you soon man,
XXXX

I didnt respond to that and then last night at 2 AM I got this other message...

"I do owe you for my nickname. Hundreds refer to me simply as "The Griz". Even in my professional career, Managers, VP's, Peers, et all".....

What does this mean, "I do owe you"... I kind of took this as he is sending me a message out of a twisted sense of obligation and him feeling like he owes me. I dont want anyones sympathy.

Like I said I have a history of hastily alienating people for things I perceived so I thought I would see what people thought.

Is that a douchey email to send? Honest opinions please.

You are kind of ******ed. But no point in piling on I suppose. It was his way of *slowly, tentatively* reaching out back to you. That despite whatever negative **** the two of you have been through, you'll always be the guy who gave him his nickname (and thus had a major impact on his life). So reach back slowly. Talk and chat over e-mail for a while. Don't push things. Let it take its natural course.

Well, I might use the word unique, but I am interested in how you came to be friends with a one year old. (And I am sorry for your loss.)

I'm confused as to what possible advice you could need.

Your email was fine, his response was fine. He thinks the relationship could be repaired eventually but not now. After he sent the email he had an afterthought about "owing you" for the nickname - and that's a colloquial statement, meaning he will always feel grateful to you - you can use this to get a favor or two out of him but it's not a debt in the traditional sense - so he sent a text to express that.

What about this is unclear to you?

Your OP says that you were also best friends with his one year old brother, that is unusual...

You two should bond over a nice zucchini, lube it up together and then he can shove it up your ass. Split the profit 65/35 and you two can spend a weekend playing grab ass somewhere nice.

I got $125 on this.

It sounds to me like he mentally seperated himself from you and he's treading lightly. I'd move on.

Don't zucchinis have 2 usable ends? Sharing it would be great for bonding.
