I don't see Islam as any better or worse than Christianity. Hell, there are some Christians today that still consider women so inferior that they don't allow them to be priests. Both religions are rooted in the ancient world and those cultures. The difference is that the "West" has developed differently and become much more secular, wealthy, better educated, etc. Most Muslim countries are still much more traditional societies and thus have more traditional interpretations of Islam. I mean, plenty of Christians have used the Bible for things like the Crusades, antisemitism, slavery, etc.
Edit: I mean, there are Christians in Africa using their belief in Jesus to justify killing gays. It's about traditional versus "developed" cultures more than any inherent qualities of the religion itself. Along with a whole host of other reasons.
