Moved in new appartment some noise problems Moved in new appartment some noise problems

I just recently moved in a new appartment and i like it a lot but the one drawback is that it's next to a busy road.
So once every minute i hear a car going by which can get annoying.
Is there anything i can do to lessen this?
Also i don't have any furniture and curtains yet so maybe that will help a bit.

Buy furniture and curtains. Then reevaluate.

Lay banana peels all along the road. After the first few cars spin out, they'll learn their lesson and take a different route.

Why limit yourself to just banana peels?

You'll get used to it.

Do curtains and furnature usually make a big differance?

Only if the couch gets perfectly stuck in the window.

When is the noise bothering you? Does it bother you all day or just when trying to sleep?

I have a condo on the Hudson river in NY, which is wonderful but the Metro North train is right there. It hardly bothers me during the day but at night and early morning it was irritating to me especially if they were doing any kind of track work or when it is very foggy then the trains have to blow the horn and that is super annoying. What I do to block out the sound is I sleep with two fans going. They are not blowing on me but just making a loud consistent humming sound which blocks out any other sounds. However, once you start using a fan there is no going back. I now have to bring my fans with me whereever I travel because I need that humming to get to sleep. Just be sure to buy fans that make a loud humming sound. Many fans are made to be quiet. If you want to try fans I can recommend brands that make a very good humming sound.

Also, many neighbors of mine have installed special windows that are soundproof. However, since it sounds as though you are renting I doubt you would want to invest that kind of money. Once you furnish the apartment that should help as well.

If you file the appropriate paperwork now, you might be able to have that road rerouted before the end of the decade.

Good advice Jessie,

It's especially troubling in the morning and when i'm trying to go to sleep.
During daytime there is usually music or TV so it's not all that bad.
How much would installing sound proof windows cost?
Ill try to look for some cool fans. Maybe try sleeping with music on?

White noise like the sound of ocean waves or a waterfall. Also a loud fan, or an air purifier/ionizer. I use all three of these to nullify the noise pollution caused by nearby traffic.

I use a nature sounds CD on repeat which includes waves, streams, rain, and waterfall sounds.

I will ask the neighbor for a ballpark figure on cost and at get back to this tread. You can also Google "Soundproof Windows."

The fan that I use is the Honeywell HF-810 High-Velocity 3-Speed Air-Circulator Floor Fan (make sure you buy this model as they have another model which looks identical online but is a tabletop fan that is much smaller and makes little to no humming sound). Two of these placed on either side of the bed and all you hear is a consistent humming sound. You can get this fan anywhere online and in stores during the summer season.

What exactly have you "moved into" this apartment if you have no furniture? You moved your clothes in?

i've been playing a lot of bfbc2 lately and a few properly placed anti-tank mines should eliminate this problem

Deffinately check into soundproofing the windows. My first apartment down at the Jersey Shore was located right on Ocean Blvd and during the summer the noise from thundering base- people's car stereos, motorcycles, bad mufflers, and other stuff was considerable. However, I had soundproof windows it was reduced signifianctly. If the noise is too much, and you like your building/location -- do what I did and wait til another apt becomes available. I traded in my street locale to oceanfront in less than 4 months and my landlord only charged me with a move fee and obvs the increase in rent due to a better scenery Good Luck!

I had similar problem with a train and started looking into soundproofing but I eventually got used to it where i could sleep right through within a few days. If not white noise machine at full blast and ear plugs. Thats what is currently getting me through the reroofing they are doing on the apartment complex across the way.
