Be cool, be real. Pot won't destroy your life. But you gotta make your younger brother evaluate. Ask him why he's doing weed. Be real. Don't act like your mother. Be cool.

To do what needs doing, you have to have your priorities straight. Honestly, he can take his time doing that.

In other news, my father is now talking opening about smoking weed aroudn my mom, thus ruining her attempts to pretend she hasn't been married to a pothead. He's more daring than I am, in part because I don't want HIM to know I smoke, as I really don't wanna be high around my Dad.
my friends little brother used to smoke daily when he was like 15, he is very resourceful IMO, and if they hadn't put him in jail for stealing front doors off of new construction homes and trying to return them to Home Depot for money to buy crystal meth, I'm sure he would have moved up to garage doors and aluminum siding by now.

just to reiterate the views of those like CincyHR (2004 grad here), don't let friends and family go to GWU. Go to a damn state school: save money, have an experience less likely to induce suicide, and get a better education.

OP, it sounds like you don't have much of a friendship with your brother, which sucks for him because he doesn't have any other friends. He probably idolizes you. When you get home on winter break, be his friend. Invite him to hang out with you separate from your "family time" with your mom. At the same time, you should try to be a positive role model for him. I don't have any specific advice about the weed situation, but doing the above certainly can't hurt.

If there is a big disparity between the attention you two recieved growing up, you are probably the worst possible person to talk to him about this. Assuming your statement is not clouded by your own prejudices, he has spent his whole life hearing why can't you be more like your older brother? So he is doing everything he can to distinguish himself from you.

The best thing you can do is to try to establish a relationship with your brother outside of the typical family settings. When you go home make a point to bring him out to some parties (with no weed involced obbviously) and talk to him about how screwed up both your parents are. Make him feel like you two are "in it together." Whatever you do don't go in there telling him how drugs are bad (mmmkay) and how he is hurting your mother because he just doesn't care and it will only push him further into it.

Once you guys develop some sort of a friendship then you can encourage him to move away from the drug scene and there is a small chance he might listen to you.

It's a lot of work and chances are he will still be a stoner, but if that doesn't work you can come home for spring break looking like this and he will rebel by going straight edge

[QUOTE=jerilee;7452858] He has always been the one growing up who didn't get any attention, including from me, since everyone always loved me growing up and still do. He was rebellious but not in that way - he just wouldn't really listen to my mom and would just play computer games all day and stay home but that was about it. He really hasn't had many friends growing up, definitely no close ones. Neither my mom nor I would have ever expected that he would smoke weed.

LOL This whole statement is funny to me. Your brother sounds like someone I would like much more than you do. I'd give you a wedgie if I met you.

Where does a 16 year old get enough money to smoke that much weed? When I was 16 the only guys that smoked that much usually sold a little to offset the expense.

Try suggesting that he cut back to maybe once or twice per week. Being pertpetually stoned provides diminishing returns. By smoking infrequently he should be able to have much more enjoyable experiences.
