This is a cell phone company that offers no contract plans (data, text, phone) at about half the price of the other major cell phone companies. I've already confirmed I'll be in their covered region but I'd like to get a phone that is not on their offered list of phones they sell directly.

I called and asked about using an unlocked phone that is not provided by them and they said if its cdma and unlocked it should work, but they cannot guarantee the service quality.

Does anyone have any experience with their service and hopefully some knowledge of about using phones other than those listed on their website with their plans? I'm looking to get a Nexus S or maybe the new Nexus when it comes out.

Any advice is appreciated. I didn't get much answers from google, and if this is the wrong forum, sorry in advance. It was my best guess of where it was appropriate to post.

I was wondering the same thing... Just started a promo, 4 plans for smart phones for $100... I pay $100 for my one, so get some friends and divide that up its much much cheaper..

They will probably be gone in 5 years unless one of the bigger carriers acquire them. These smaller carriers just can't keep up with the cost of upgrading the technology like Verizon, AT&T, Sprint and T-Mo are doing.

They have great deals on international calling for the time being.

I know a lot of people that have used them. If you stick to a small area that has good reception it is a great deal. The reception areas are very limited though.

I think they will be around in five years. They are are attempting to buy a lot of the redundant ATT/Tmobile assets..

Afew years back I used to work Technical Support for Kyocera Wireless. A number of our phones were on the Metro PCS network. They were the company that were complained about the 2nd most (only behind Cricket). I heard alot of issues regarding the network as it often got blamed on our phones.

I dont know about them 'disapearing' since they have been around for at least 6+ years already.

But take my word with a grain of salt since I actually live in Canada. This is my only experience with them - and it has been negative (albeit, not many people exactly called us to 'congratulate' us on a working product)

They're growing pretty fast, and reception is far better than it used to be. I think they will continue to grow in market share for at least a few years, and in terms of technology they already have 4G, etc.

No clue on the OP question.

My friend owns a Metro (POS) store, he will tell you himself to go with Boost Mobile, you will be covered by the Sprint network.

metropcs is one of the fastest growing franchises in the U.S.atm ...they will be around for awhile. ...

metropcs has been around in florida for awhile ....i had them when they first came out about 6-7 yrs ago ...contracts are cheap but you get what you pay for dropped calls , bad reception at times . etc . but still not bad for its price.i have heard their reception is better these days tho ..

I agree with you guys that Metro has done well for a small carrier. Definitely well ahead of Cricket and Clearwire. Their stock has bounced back a bit too. Even though they have 4G in some areas, I still believe it will be tough to expand their infrastructure and keep their discount price programs. But, I do hope they stay and continue to grow.

Isn't Metro PCS still like $60/month for data etc.? It would seem by the time you recoup your spending $400+ extra to buy a phone for retail, it wouldn't be worth it.

Good point, I live in FL and they're about the only cell co. that pretty much sucks here. That being said they've been around quite awhile and don't expect they'll be going anywhere soon. Anyone I know that tried them for business cancelled.
