Yes . She's going to stay, which is good for me financially, but you would think bad from a life perspective due to the swongs on my graph. Since that day after I posted that, though, things have actually been going really, really well. I'm sure I sound like a battered housewife, but I think we've found a workable arrangement, and honestly I'm pretty happy currently.

It's cool if you don't want to answer this, but I received ~$2600 last year for test proctoring, all of which was untaxed. They sent me a 1099-MISC (instead of W-2s, for this reason). Do I have to set this up as private business/consulting income (SE or something like that), because it makes my return go from $450 to -$250 when I do.

This is standard, but what you did is fine since the rear ender is always going to be at fault in this situation.

Thanks. I see there was a bit of differing viewpoints, but this was my thinking. Traffic had started moving through a green light, then stopped because it was backed up at another green 100 ft or so down the street. Everyone seemed to notice except the girl right in front of me who plowed into the back of the car in front of her. It was clearly her fault for not paying attention, so I wasn't real sure what I could add to any report.

Interesting situation though. I've seen a couple of near wrecks before (and a few actual ones) but I've never seen one from this POV where you knew it was going to happen before it did. I even made an 'Ooh' sound and my gf asked me what was up right before and as the wreck happened and I said 'That'.

Despite the ****ty situation, you must have felt pretty awesome after that transaction.

Indeed. I've been reading 'Blink' so I thought it was a good real-life example of how your brain can process information quickly and come to a decision (in this case, that the car in front of me was traveling to fast to not cause a wreck).

I'm not a tax professional, but I am a full-time copywriter who freelances in his spare time and has to file in a similar manner. You have to report that income as a private business. You will pay whatever applicable taxes due to your tax bracket, as well as a 10% (I think) self employment tax. You can write off any purchases you made toward the business, as well as any fraction of your rent that goes toward a home office. You can also apply a portion of these deductions to your business next year, which you'd probably want to do since your itemized deductions won't surpass the standard deduction (most likely). Any tax pros, feel free to correct me, but I think this is the gist of it.

You need to report it and it will be subject to Self-Employment tax (on top of the federal rate tax). However, unless you have a bunch of expenses related to it, I would not report it on a schedule C (Profit and Loss from Sole Proprietorship) but instead include it on Line 21 of the 1040 (Other Income) and identify it as "Consulting Income".

1099-MISC is a bitch.

otnemem...everything you said is correct, but again, if there are no real expenses related to the income, a schedule C is unnecessary.

A perfect example: My wife was the buyer's agent for her best friend when she was purchasing her new house. She really didn't have to do much besides spend about 5 hours in meetings and answering questions. She had no expenses. We are reporting that $5,000 on line 21 as "RE Commissions".

I had this about the second day I was in Estonia, and once I realised the woman was about $3 short, I paid for it

Thanks. I have no expenses related to this at all (outside, I suppose, of the gas it cost to drive .75 miles to work 20+ times, but I don't really know how much that is or want to itemize it).

Figured there wasn't much I could do, just don't look forward to paying the govt money. Wish I could go back to them taking out taxes as they originally did when I started test proctoring.

Can't we start a pre-culling thread now? The anticipatory drama is the best part. No, maybe it's the whining before the ax is swang. Or is it the part where they make an ATF thread against the rules of the Sticky and get pwned? It's all great. Blood Blood Blood
