lost friends shoes, OOT decide what I owe him lost friends shoes, OOT decide what I owe him

So I went to play soccer at the gym yesterday, couldn't find my running shoes so I borrowed my friends (with permission). Of course there are no set terms on what happens if I lose the shoes.

Anyhow bull**** happens and I lost them, god damn it.

So really, I think there's three options here:

(1) I buy him brand new shoes
(2) I give him shoes that my dad gave me. My dad runs marathons so he goes through a pair of running shoes every 3 months or so. Because they haven't been exposed to the weather they look brand ****ing new! Therefore I never buy running shoes for myself. They fit him.
(3) I give him the amount of money I think the shoes were worth. I'd say they were worth about $20 of their original cost.

These running shoes were at least 1 year old, probably close to 2-3 years old. I think he just uses them for gym use, but I think if they are used for other occasions then he probably does need to buy new shoes (otherwise he's wearing literally my 50-year old dad's shoes, girls won't dig that). New Balance brand.

and yeah, I obviously suck at poker if I care about a $100. If the ballers in the crowd are having a problem caring about that much, pretend its a car or something.

Whatever you do, take care of your shoes.

Agree. There's more at stake here than just what his shoes were worth, utility value + the griminess factor of wearing someone else's shoes means 1>2>3 if you want to be a remotely good friend. And considering you really haven't been, if you lost the guy's shoes and he's been going without them, just suck it up and go with 1.

also 3 is essentially a KITN.

Buy him some new shoes. Sounds like he has enough of a burden just being your friend.

I just hate buying new ones mostly cause I don't have the money. And they aren't really worth that. They looked like they should be replaced in the first place.

Obviously if its his choice between 1 and 2, why the hell would he pick 2?

How is this anything other than buy him another pair of shoes. Who cares what you thought they were worth, and if you consider you are overpaying think of it as a gift.

tell him you gave them to a homeless person and ask why he didn't think of doing something like this himself and that you do not think you can continue a friendship with somebody so insensitive.

Suggest 2 and see how he feels. If he doesn't like it go with 1.

If you can't afford to replace the **** don't borrow the ****. Doesn't matter how old it is or what condition it is in you are obligated to replace it and you're a douche if you bring up anything other than getting a new one to replace the old one.

CTN,

Offer him either one pair of new shoes or a few pairs of your dad's used shoes, his choice.

Diablo,

He's taken a pair of my dad's shoes before. That change anything? But yeah I could definitely arrange two pairs of dad's shoes.

Great answer. "Hey man, I can either go buy you a new pair or I'll give you a gently used pair every 3 months or so for the next year. I'll even clean them for you before giving them to you. Oh, and sorry I lost your shoes. I don't know what I was thinking walking home barefoot. I'm pretty stupid."

wow you are some friend.

fine choose 3, with the knowledge that this friend, along with any other common friends, will not loan you jack **** from now on.

i mean i wouldn't loan you anything if you tried to pull this ****. now if you offer 1, he might just tell you a cheaper option.

think of it like those insurance policies that offer new items for stolen/damaged items in your home.

You took the item, you lost it, he should get a new replacement. It may even keep you from losing something of someone else's in the future since you'll have been stung once.

well he's right that, if anyone is offered 1 or 2, absolutely no one would pick 2

I think it depends.

maybe the other guy knows the OP is a poor, tactless fool who will have to give bj's in a back alley to buy a new pair of shoes.

maybe the other guy also believes it was about time to replace those shoes anyway.

maybe the dad buys high quality running shoes and the other guy likes them.

maybe he just wants to cut op some slack.

there would still be monetary limitations....if the OP lost a pair of 10$ shoes; he can't be expected to buy the guy a 150$ pair of running shoes....so maybe the dad's used shoes would be a good deal.

You lost his shoes. Buy him a new pair. Sure his old pair may not be worth the price of a new pair but you lost his. So now maybe your friend won't be, "Hey my dumbass friend lost my shoes" but rather, "My friend lost my shoes but he bought me a brand new pair to replace them. How cool is that?!"

Buy him a new pair if he refuses to go 1/2's with you on a new pair, only right thing to do, you borrowed without asking and lost something...you replace it, doesn't matter how old the object is.
