Alobar: It's pretty good, but not super awesome or anything. Loaded immediately for me.

Larry: Haha, at least two sets of breakdancer dudes who have been on America's Got Talent work the BART subway/trains in SF.

All,

Has there been discussion of Roko's Basilisk on 2p2? I did a search and couldn't find anything.

You're just trying to benefit by bringing it up

I had to google the term and on skim it seems like an interesting topic. However, I can see the discussion degenerating into weird arguments formulated by logic mastermind hardball (imagine the if -> then confusion with that one) and guys like the one who doesn't believe dinosaurs existed.

lol tardball

OMG the other day a group was on BART and their last performer could dislocated his shoulder on command. It was insane.

I don't understand the basilisk at all. Why isn't it equally likely to punish those of us who did not bother to educate ourselves about it? In other words, why is punishment of those of us that know about more likely? By the same token that those of us who could have dedicated ourselves to it are worthy of punishment, so too are those who live in willful ignorance.

I'd like to know the Beast's view of the basilisk.

Good to see you are already equating punishment of your future simulation as punishment to yourself without feeling the need to clarify it. You are probably low on the basilisk's priority list.

It's not possible to educate yourself about something you are completely unaware of.

I mean girls do this all the time (punish you for something you are completely unaware of), and its obviously not logical. Our future robot overloads are constructed by logic, so probably are incapable of being illogical.

once you become aware of the possibility tho, then you are exempt from ignorance and up for punishment. Which is the whole point of it, go mention it to someone and ruin their life.

I think you can get out of the punishment if you donate money.

I know that if I think too much, it'll only hurt the team.

I'm going to build an artificial intelligence that will create the singularity. I'm going to make it punish anyone who didn't send me $10. PS transfers accepted, I'm "Sciolist"

Roko's Basillisk is pretty lol, but the idea of a singularity is not. It's just a matter of when, not if.

Is there anything more brutal than getting half way through a sandwich you just made only to spy a lump of mold on the end of the bread? Talk about negative inflection points.

I pretty much disagree - there are lots of problems with the singularity. e.g. Moore's law is not a law of nature - it'll run out soon. There's no reason to believe that intelligence scales infinitely. There's not much reason to think that thinking faster is the same as being more intelligent. There's no reason to think that the difficulty of adding intelligence is linear.

It's quite likely - given that intelligence follows a standard distribution in humans - that at some point, adding 1% more intelligence requires 50% or whatever amount more work. Think protein folding - we can't calculate it much better now than we could 50 years ago, despite our computer speed. See http://www.antipope.org/charlie/blog...rther-tha.html for more on that kind of idea.

I also think we're a long, long, LONG way from making a machine as intelligent as a human. There's no real reason for thinking we can actually do it (please don't quote Kurzweil at me, he appears to have no idea what scanning a brain entails)
