Saw a taped interview of Buddy several years ago where he said he let LB Larry Grantham make all the defensive calls in SB III. I played some golf and a lot of gin rummy with Larry, and honestly don't remember him telling any SB III stories. He had a lot of other good ones though. Good golfer and a very good gin player. RIP Larry.

Don't know how familiar you are with the players of that era but the Jets had a WR named Don Maynard who was a very good player and nicknamed "Country Don," I think because of a slow drawl. Larry said Maynard was the smartest person he ever met--and was a better gin player than he was. I was amazed at both of those assessments.

I've never played cribbage, but gin is probably the most fun card game ever.

Cribbage is fun, but it sure feels like the luck element is high. I may just be a cribbage fish though.

That's what I like about gin. It is a quick and dirty task to determine whether your opponent is a better player than you. Yet there is just enough variance that a lot of people can not make that determination accurately.

That would be a top 10% sketch in today's SNL.

I mean, yes, with the caveat that I gave up on SNL years ago and am just trusting that it hasn’t meaningfully bounced back. But it was whatever in the Hartman/Farley/Sandler years.

I can win at poker hammered. Gin requires much more memory.

You got that right!

Oddly enough, as with most other things, the more a person drinks the better they think they can play. Weird.

Rob, top five musical crimes perpetuated by Stevie Wonder in the 80s and 90s, go.

SUB-QUESTION: is it in fact unfair to criticize a formerly great artist for his latter day sins? Is it better to burn out than fade away?

I mean I know that "I Just Called to Say I Love You" was a thing that actually happened, but five? I may just be ignorant.

I've got no problem with a musician cashing in. I also don't begrudge, say, Robert De Niro for entering a career mode where he stopped turning down scripts as long as they met his price. Seems like fair game, after an extremely respectable body of work, to just start cashing big checks without discernment for the quality of the art. But obviously the musician is risking more, because if they hit it big with a top 40 song then it risks defining their career to more listeners. The actor mostly just has their bad movies get ignored outside of those examples where they bombed in the face of massive hype.

Billy Joel:

Quote:
It seems like the music business has taken a huge dump. The boomers are out of the pop field right now. They don’t like what they’re hearing, and they’re not buying it. They’re going to country, they’re going to classic rock or … I hate to call it easy listening. I know I’m perceived as a mainstay of soft rock — which to me is like soft cock. I hate that. Fifty percent of the music on my albums is hard rock. If I was a listener, and all I knew was “Tell Her About It,” “It’s Still Rock & Roll to Me” and “Uptown Girl,” I wouldn’t like Billy Joel, neither. I don’t have a soft cock – I got a hard cock. [pauses] I think I’m as pissed off now as I was 10 years ago. Here I am, I’m 48 – I got to write another kind of music. I just got to do something else. I don’t know.
