I cringed just from seeing the pic of the tatted marine arm. The text lived up to my expectations.

Probably a lose/lose to address it. What would you want to accomplish? And why do you want to hide the fact you are an atheist?
Because almost everyone else in my family still believes in God. Most of them don't go to church anymore, so for the most part they live their lives as functional atheists. But I know they still consider themselves Christians and believe in God and Heaven and an afterlife, just judging by the stuff most of them post and share. And this is why you don't friend family members on Facebook.

the functional difference between christians and atheists is much wider than just going or not going to church. For example, a christian may not go to church, but would still live as a functional christian if they were known to post and share their thoughts on God, Heaven and the afterlife, if those thoughts are generally aligned with christian beliefs. oh wait:

I agree that living as "a functional Christian" in 21st century USA really does amount to almost nothing more than sharing ******ed images and false quotes on Facebook, a few "attaboys" Likes to people who scorn evolution and free thinking, and then basking in one's self-righteousness. Otherwise living their lives indistinguishably from non-believers. Religion is little more than "team sports" for the masses... born into a set of beliefs that your mascot and team is superior to the rest thanks to the geography of your birth. Onward Christian soldiers is their fight song. The Cross is their helmet logo. Just win baby.

You don't know the difference between agnosticism and atheism, do you?

I like how the comment saying he's a dbag for not donating to charity has 167 likes, and the one saying how many charities he's donated to only has 67.

Most of the difference is semantic. Most atheists, including myself, consider themselves agnostics as well.

Yes, this. I don't claim to know whether or not a God exists. That makes me agnostic. I do not believe that a God exists because the side making that claim has not met its burden of proof. That makes me an atheist.

The gnostic/agnostic terms really refer to whether you think it's something that can be known definitively; it's separate from whether you believe or not. So you can be either a gnostic atheist or an agnostic one, although I can't imagine even the staunchest atheist thinking that existence/non-existence of God can be proven.

So how can you call someone who still believes in god a "functional atheist"?

IMO, they're functional atheists if they believe in God, but they live their lives in a way that is indistinguishable from the way an atheist lives his life. Maybe most of my family doesn't qualify for that term because they do make and share god-related posts. Plus I have no way of knowing if they pray to God. I would definitely describe myself from about 10 years ago as a functional atheist. I still believed God existed, but it didn't effect how I lived my life. I never expected God to intervene in matters of my life and had long since stopped praying to him.
