Weird.

An awful TV cliche, mostly on shows like CSI is to show the detectives (or maybe parents) trying to get into someones computer or email account or whatever. They always solve it by doing something like "he's got a Metallica poster, try 'Metallica'!". In addition to being lazy writing, it annoys me because nobody would just ****ing put "Metallica" as their password, it would be "Matallicarulez", "Metall1ca", "EnterSandman" or something. Guess I was wrong.

Ok 2+2 I need your help

How are your featured friends generated???

Alot of people say that this is how you can tell who is secretly stalking/in love with you and is not randomly generated. FB says it would never disclose who visits your profile.... Your thoughts??

FB gives you no way to know who is stalking you. Period.

It's all based on your behaviour, so there's probably a lot of lonely people out there that stalk people (bringing them up more often) and then really hope that they're being stalked too.

I don't think this is true...I have about 550 friends
When I refresh I get the same batch of 10 friends everytime during the day. Some days I will post a pic or something and then notice my featured friends changing. I see people whom I never interact with but who would still be interested in checking my profile out coming up for a day or two afterwards. There is an algorithm they use and I'm pretty sure this is done somehow.

It has to do with your use of facebook, not everybody else's. There is absolutely no way to tell who's been looking at your stuff.

Is this considered a humble brag? Pointing out that you have 550 friends and that you're ******ed.

How many friends do people on FB have? I'm at 216 and there's a good number on there that should probably be removed.

I have 50. I used to do the thing where I added everyone I ever met but after a while I realised that was really horrible because I could never really post things on my Facebook without feeling a bit awkward about it. I mean, I post a lot of random ****, and I don't want to have to think about what 200+ people are going to think of it before I post.

So I just have 50 people, good friends/family, people I see often or at least stay in contact with. It feels a lot better for me because I can just post or write whatever I want and never have to worry about what people might think.

I don't know about you... but I'm the F'n man.

lol at humble brag as 500 is not even alot of FB friends....Thought this was average. Plus I NEVER get de-friended or purged foos cause like I said I'm the man.

Anyways... there has been some discussion about it and the conclusion is that it is not random and it is not always based on your interaction with the people. I implore you to google the topic.

No one said it was random. There's obviously an algorithm - but none of the inputs are how your friends are viewing your profile. The conclusions arrived at by a bunch of randoms on the internet aren't meaningful to me.

Of those 550 people how many have you had more than 40 hours of relatively personal interaction with (say working on the same project together)?

How do you know what the inputs are? Are you in possession of the formula/algorithm? And you seem to be a clueless internet random should I disregard your meaningless and assumptive input saying you know the inputs? I wont for the sake of this thread

Like 5 of my friends deserve to be featured because I actually interact with them on FB a fair amount (responding to statuses, chat, messages, likes etc). The other 4 or 5 seem to not be so random and alot of the times the people are are not those whose profile I would ever think about looking at but would look at mine(not to sound like conceited a guy).

Just a few examples...

I post a bangin song by souljaboy from Youtube on my FB:
that day or the next day there are 2-3 people who I never ever talk to but I know would be interested in the song/music whatever. One whose avatar is "Real Hip-Hop is not on the radio" aka Hater who I havn't really checked up on in years.

I post a pic of me or whatever and I get a comment from a female on w/e. The next day there are pictures of my ex gf's and some other girls who I am pretty sure had crushes on my featured list.

I dont think it is intentional but something in the program does this and its kinda like a secret way of knowing who looked at your profile or pictures.

If your FB is not poppin like mine then (Where you look at people pages more and people look at your pages less) then things may change but this is definitely my reality.

FB could never come out and admit it cause they said they would never allow people the ability to know who looks at their profile due to privacy issues and stuff but I have a pretty good idea based on what I post and the new faces on my featured friends.

It's funny to me how you can't see that all of your examples make sense without requiring FB to use how other people have viewed your profile.

To be fair, my first post "It's all based on your behaviour" was incorrect in the sense that that's obviously an over simplification. My second post "There's obviously an algorithm - but none of the inputs are how your friends are viewing your profile" is correct.

Edit: ****, sorry for another derail in this thread.

Edit: I promised myself to not make another post on this ******ed topic. So I'll cheat by editing this one. FB knows about all of their users likes/dislikes/preferences. So after posting a link to a song you might see some of your friends that also like that song. Or after posting a picture of a friend, you might see status updates for people closely connected to that friend (based on information already available to you). Depending on your settings they'll also sometimes display random friends you haven't interacted with for awhile. It's not magic. Friends, how do they work?

Care to explain how they would make sense if I haven't bothered to look at their profile ever ? Out of 550 friends, those with the most interest in my post are appearing in my featured friends list?

taken from the interwebs :

Seems to take public interactions you've had (likes, comments, etc.) & combine it with who's been viewing your profile.

For example, I commented on a relative's wall for her birthday a couple of months ago, then we met up a few nights ago. Coincidentally, her name began appearing in the "Top 10" list a day later. I hadn't viewed her profile since wishing her a happy birthday so chances are, after getting together with me, she decided to view my profile.

Also tested the theory out from the other side. I chose a friend who had liked or commented on a status of mine, then began viewing her profile. I refreshed the page a couple of times and voila, I began appearing in her list of ten people.

The last example is tricky- I've been visiting my ex's page quite frequently & liked maybe one of his posts. It's driving me crazy because he keeps appearing on my list of 10 people & I can't figure out whether he's there because I'm viewing his page a lot or he's viewing mine. Either way, it's a breach of privacy. What makes it more confusing is the fact that there are other people's pages I visit & comment on a lot & they're not appearing in my list.

What I don't like about this new format is that there is absolutely no control over who appears in the list, as with the old facebook format. Even if you make your own list, the default list shows up as well.

Has anyone else seen this trend?

jodokast,

while your status updates itt are idiotic, narcissistic, and annoying, i don't think you understand this thread. the srs biznss thread about facebook algorithms is, uh, somewhere else (maybe try that bodybuilder forum?).

When I refresh my screen my featured friends stay pretty much the same after 8 refreshes(maybe one or two swapping back and forth)...until someone else views my profile and they are included.

I Even asked one of my friends who popped up on the list this morning if they had just recently viewed my profile and they said "yes, how did you know."

Sorry JJ but I think this is a pretty big deal for FB.

Wait, are you a girl or a gay dude? You were talking about getting "comments from females" earlier, so now i'm really confused.

OK, most of the stuff I've posted I at least got a laugh out of. This one's just AWFUL.

"now vicariously i have her in me i want to peel off my skin let the water wash in
you always said that i was hiding that i was hiding from you but you are capable of things i could not do..things i COULD NOT DO. i remember how you pretended...how you pretended to touch me i remember how i couldn't bring myself to believe..i remember wondering what was wrong..... how could i be so naive"

She just broke up with her boyfriend. She's 30. Ye Gods.
