I quite enjoyed this.

My FB feed is filled with people saying how bad a year it's been because of celebrity deaths or something. You didn't know these people, you don't love them, yeah so they were in some movies and then many years later they died. Deal with it. Seems bizarre to me. Whatever, social media has been weird lately.

i agree that its a pretty shallow and pathetic way to evaluate how good a year is.

A woman on my FB feed posted "RIP Alan Thicke" when he died a couple of weeks ago. The first response was "Why do you care about a celebrity dying when there are children dying in Aleppo?"

Sigh.

Obv that commenter has never really listened to the theme song from growing pains on a pair of good cans. It's basically world peace in music form.

one does not have to not care about alan thicke dying in order to also care about children dying in aleppo.

if you must post about children dying in aleppo in order to post about anyone else dying, you should be doing nothing but spamming facebook with all the terrible things that are happening to everyone all the time. how can you care about children dying in aleppo when 3 month old babies are being eaten alive by rats in south africa.

Yeah I'm not 100% sure, but I think that the original complainers about 2016 were related to what's happened in Syria, as well as being pushed by possible anti-brexiters or anti-trumpers.

Then a bunch of other people that haven't paid attention to Syria at all wanted to jump on the 'omg 2016 sucks bandwagon', and thought it must be about the fact that a relatively normal batch of celebrity deaths have happened. So now people think that the 2016 sucks thing is all about celebrity deaths.

I mean to be fair, a huge amount of celebrities have died in 2016. Joan Rivers, Robin Williams, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Lauren Bacall, Shirley Temple & Richard Attenborough is a .... Wait no that's 2014

it's bizarre for the reasons you mentioned and also bc every year a ton of celebrities die. this year hasn't been some anomaly.

What's new is people feel the need to exaggerate how important these celebrities are to them. People I know who apparently got through difficult years in their life thanks to David Bowie when I have never heard them mention him ever before is near 100%.

I think anti-trumpers think this is the worst year because trump got elected while pro-trumpers are re-joicing about how great 2017 is going to be with trump but are still bitching about 2016 w/ obama.
