Afraid I can't add much. It was one Facebook update, but I only saw it as a colleague commented on it. I can't shed any light on the sad story as I don't know the people involved, and it seems the update in question was probably deleted. His latest update, at least that I as a non friend can see, is this:

On rare occasion, I offer to buy them a meal (like fast food) if it's around lunchtime so long as they are willing to chat a bit. Most politely decline. I suppose it takes away time that could be used begging for money.
