Recently here in Edmonton they have switched over to the area code being necessary when dialing local calls. If the number is 555-1111, we now have to dial 780-555-1111.
This is just a minor inconvenience.
HOWEVER
It's not working properly.
If I dial 555-1111, it rings twice and I get the message "The local number you dialed must be preceded by the area code, your call will now proceed. For future calls please dial the area code." The call goes through, but there is a 10 - 20 second delay on every call waiting to hear this message.
If I dial 1-780-555-1111, it rings twice, and I get the message "It is not necessary to dial 1 when making a local call, etc". The line then goes dead.
If I dial 780-555-1111, the line starts giving me the busy signal right after I enter the 780-5551. It is registering it as a 7 digit number and not finding it obv.
So my only choice is to continue dialing normally, and hearing the damn message every call.
I am slowly going nuts.
