(Haven't heard the show at all this week.)

I keep hearing that Sirius agreed to make several concessions to get the merger done, but I can't find what they are. Did they end up giving channels to Jesse Jackson?

I haven't listened to Sirius, but this is the latest update I've read:

XM Merger Conditions Under Fire From Black Lawmakers

Senior members of the Congressional Black Caucus criticized the conditions for the proposed merger of Sirius and XM Satellite Radio Monday, saying the deal does not go far enough when it comes to providing spectrum for minority-owned programming. Both services have agreed to lease 4% their spectrums (12 channels) for programming run by minorities and women.

Rep. G.K. Butterfield (D-NC), who chairs the Congressional Black Caucus's group on satellite radio, called Martin's proposal "completely unacceptable." The black caucus had requested that merged satcasters lease five times that amount of spectrum to companies owned by minorities. Otherwise, caucus members have previously said they would oppose the merger.

Rep. Elijah E. Cummings (D-MD), a former chairman of the caucus, also expressed his displeasure yesterday about the proposed deal and said that he would consider legislative action to stop the merger unless the minority percentage is increased.

"It's shocking to the conscience in this day and age, where the minority populations comprise a significant part of the satellite radio audience, that Mr. Martin would settle for what I deem to be crumbs that have fallen off the table," Cummings said in an interview. "We can do much better. I am hoping that this can be revisited." (06-17-08)

That would be hilarious, if it wasn't true.

He wants 20% of the new Sirius/XM company? Why don't we give him 20% of Starbucks and Exxon, as well? Maybe we can give him 4% of WalMart, to hear him complain more about "crumbs that have fallen off the table".

YTF,

I find it pretty ridiculous too. That being said, there's one thing I have always thought satcasters should be doing. I obviously don't know what it costs, on the technical end, to add a new channel, but I feel they should be opening up their technology to companies who are willing to pay a fair and reasonable lease price to place their content on satellite radio. I've never felt that satellite radio presented any monopoly-type threat to consumers, but I would hate to see them be able to block content just because they own the technology.

I'm not sure I quite understand what you're saying. Please expand on this when you have a chance. I guess I just don't get the 'blocking content' part of your argument. Obviously, there are huge huge huge barriers to entry into the satellite radio market. Why should Sirius/XM have to rent channels to people they don't want to? Do you also feel that USA Today should have to run adds from companies that they don't want to as long as said companies are willing to pay for it? I'm trying to attack your opinions necessarily, just understand them better.

Again, I'm not even close to knowledgeable about the techincal side of satellite radio, so if there's an legitimate cost-prohibitive arguement against my opinion, I would probably conceed to it.

That said, I do feel they should be leasing channels, as long as the price is fair and reasonable. We've seen that satellite radio is not cost effective for individual companies to be competitive - thus, the proposed merger. We're essentially at a point where it's only cost-effective to have one primary company maintaining the technology. This is not the case with any other form of media, so I don't feel like there's an analogy that can argue this point. As satellite radio grows and becomes more relevant in the marketplace, I don't feel that one company should be the arbiter of who has access to the technology.

Yeah, I suppose I agree with that. However, I also wouldn't be thrilled if it cost me billions to be the first company to enter the marketplace and then i was forced let others in after that.

Well, I am totally fine with them making a profit from the leasing. They should gain something for being repsonsible for starting the technology.

Pretty sure they will be losing money, not making it by giving these channels to minorities.

carly and ben simon was one of the best interviews howard and robin have done for awhile, i bet. i'm not sure if all that information about james taylor and carly's divorce has ever been discussed anywhere, but assuming it hasn't, that was basically years of howard/robin building up on-air relationships with both principals and slowly setting the table to where it was comfortable to have that "news-worthy" conversation yesterday.

kinda interesting how far on the side of carly both of them were, with robin calling james taylor a baby at one point. i wonder if he'll ever come on the show again. i doubt it.

edit: also i thought carly's new single they played at the end was excellent and surprisingly current

I am also singing "I pissed on a girl", including singing it into a treatment room while a patient looked at me in disgust.

On a related note I decided to check out that pissmops site they mentioned on the wrap up show. Sal is one sick puppy if he likes that stuff.
