In late high school I drank a TON. It wasn't every day or anything, really just on weekends, but when I would go out drinking I would crack open and pound two half pints of gin, and then start drinking (probably about 15-20 beers or maybe 4 40's). Then in my first couple of years of college I wouldn't drink as much per night but I'd go out more often.
In my sophomore year I ended up in the hospital with bleeding gastritis (NOT caused by my drinking, but certainly not helped by it) and the doctor told me I could not drink alcohol for 3 months. That's when I learned I was not an alcoholic because I still went out to bars and parties just as often, I just didn't drink any alcohol. Not a single drop during that period.
After that, I still drank a lot, but not quite as much, and very very gradually cut down as time went on.
Now... I only go drinking once every two or three months, but when I do go out I tend to have a lot (but nowhere near as much as when I was younger). I also have a beer or glass of wine every now and then. As for actual averages, I have absolutely no clue. I guess it probably averages out to about 2 drinks a week?
Starting to play poker (10 year ago?) is actually a big reason I don't drink much any more because a lot of my socializing (even with the friends I used to drink with) was at the poker tables rather than out at a bar, and I don't drink when I play. They do, though, so that's a good thing.
