Weekdays I ave getting up 0730/0745, and try and plan for bed to be in bed by about 2300, and asleep abseolutely no later than 2330. So the max I'd be awake is 16hrs.

I like getting 8hrs sleep, enjoy more when I can get it (went to sleep about 0100 last night and up at 1000, so there's a bonus hour). Some weekends I'm up till 0000, 0100, sometimes a little later, but usually get 8 back. Also afternoon naps on weekends, mm. When I can get them.

I can function on 4-6hrs, and I'm only the least bit crabby. But like getting a full 8.

This is all, of course, now I have a job and a dog.

Interesting article on sleep from the NYT here
Quote:
some slept four hours, others six hours and others, for the lucky control group, eight hours — for two weeks in the lab…
Quote:
those who had eight hours of sleep hardly had any attention lapses and no cognitive declines over the 14 days of the study. What was interesting was that those in the four- and six-hour groups had P.V.T. results that declined steadily with almost each passing day.
Quote:
by the end of two weeks, the six-hour sleepers were as impaired as those who, in another Dinges study, had been sleep-deprived for 24 hours straight — the cognitive equivalent of being legally drunk.
Quote:
in the seven-hour group, their response time on the P.V.T. slowed and continued to do so for three days, before stabilizing at lower levels than when they started.
Quote:
after just a few days, the four- and six-hour group reported that, yes, they were slightly sleepy. But they insisted they had adjusted to their new state. Even 14 days into the study, they said sleepiness was not affecting them. In fact, their performance had tanked. In other words, the sleep-deprived among us are lousy judges of our own sleep needs. We are not nearly as sharp as we think we are.

I just couldn't function on the 5-6 hours a night that many people in this thread are talking about. I have to get at least 8-9 hours a night to be fully functional all day.

I sleep between 6-7 hrs a night. I think optimal for me would be closer to 8.

I like how everyone is answering the way more normal "how much do you sleep?" instead of the idiotic "how much are you awake?"

If you answer one. Then you answer the other. Two sides of a coin.

I'm up at night and sleep during the day, and have for a couple of years. During a routine physical, the doctor said my blood work showed a bad vitamin D deficiency. I asked where Vit D comes from, and she said "sunlight". I'm almost never outside during daylight. So she gave me some prescription level Vit D pills to take, and that's helped.

It might be worth getting that checked to see if you're getting enough sunlight/Vit D produced.

A year ago I was often sleeping 12 hours a day, getting up and going to sleep whenever I felt like it. It was ****. I lost a load of time and was always tired.

I got into a routine of going to bed and waking up at a set time every day and now I rarely sleep for more than 8 hours.

You really need to get into a routine. Force yourself to go to bed at a certain time and wake up at a certain time, allocating 8 hours for sleep. Once your body gets used to the routine you will find you won't need to sleep for longer.

I sleep 12-14 hours per day because a medication I take makes it pretty much impossible to sleep a normal amount.

When I was a functioning human being with a job and a life, I slept about 8 hours per night and that was probably about the least I could get without it slowing me down.

I feel the exact same no matter how much sleep I get (as long as its more than say 4 hours). That study above is pretty interesting though. It's quite possible that I'm not the best judge of myself as far as performance. But I do feel the same.

I wake up at 6 every day and go to sleep when I'm tired(weekdays) I'd guess it averages out to 8 hours through the week.

I'd say I probably average 8-9 hours of sleep a night, but then I'm not working right now so that's easier.

When I was working I still tried to get at least 7, though, anything less and I start feeling crappy really quickly. I can do it for short bursts (a couple of days with minimal sleep) but could never do it every week day for a prolonged period of time.

I also take medication, at least one of which makes it difficult to fall asleep and another that makes it difficult to wake up.

I used to be pretty nocturnal but it just makes me miserable missing out on most of the day. I'm usually up at half 6 and in bed around half 1

I tend to live on 26-32 hour days. I'm usually awake for a minimum of 16 hours and then asleep for a minimum of 10 hours, sometimes a lot more. "Yesterday," I woke up around 8pm on Saturday, went to sleep around midnight on Sunday, and woke up around 130 today, on Monday.

If I have somewhere to be at a fixed time every day, I can do it, but the awake for 16+ hours starting from when I wake up seems pretty non-negotiable, so I just get by on less than 8 hours of sleep a night and get increasingly fatigued until I have some time off to sleep binge.

Weekdays I'm normally asleep by 11:30 and up at 6:30. I used to have a difficult time getting out of bed in the morning but now I'm usually up before my alarm and rarely sleep in beyond 8am on weekends. I think it's one of those getting older things.
