How has your appearance affected your career? How has your appearance affected your career?

If you interview with 2 companies and perform the exact same way on the interview and they have the same opinions of your resume, but one favors good looks and one doesn't care, which company would you choose? If I am in charge of a company, I don't care how attractive you are as long as you aren't a moron, because when you enter the working world, you will realize how many there are.
I think your question is a rhetorical one, but the answer is not what you want.
(This is also why your second sentence, the one starting with "If", will remain a hypothetical for the foreseeable future)

I once worked at the state university of a large southwestern state (go Horns). The woman I worked for was considered the leader of her field. She had a job open for her second in command. The person who took this position would work for a couple of years, then go on and take over a similar program at another university.

Of the hundred or so applicants, Boss selected the top five and flew them in for interviews. Of these five, one was the dream candidate. Impeccable work credentials; both grad degrees from Ivy League schools, fluent in every language you could think of. The other four candidates were tied for fifth place. She was also a perfect, and I do mean perfect, ten.

Boss selected one of the other four. When I asked her why, she told me, and here I quote, "She doesn't need this job, she can marry anybody she wants."

Threatened? Heh.

OP,

Being tall, good looking or well groomed will give you a leg up in most corporate environments. Throw in outgoing and you will be a juggernaut. Just recognize that your appearance is something that can help you get your foot in the door at many companies. What you do after that will be based upon your ability to the perform the job you are hired to do.

To add value to the thread however, I think we're very quickly passing the generation of people who think that a "cute chick" can in no way do a technical job, so you're less likely to have to worry about not getting any respect in a new job, at least not any more than an ugly person. Anyone in a new job is likely to not get any respect until they show they can do the job.

So, in this day and age, attractiveness is pretty much all upsides.

from your perspective, as you stated, 99% of the motivation behind men "in your age group" volunteering to help is because they are trying to *** you. this doesnt mean they will actually help you, and those that do will mostly give up the second they realize they wont be able to sleep with you.

in regards to the hiring process, attractiveness is something that is subconsciously appealing. this is an obvious fact whether you are male or female.

what is interesting though, is that since most workplaces are male dominated, attractive women who enter the workplace, even if they are exceptional at what they do, will be treated in a vastly different way than a male in a similar situation. case in point, a female on the trading floor, or a female at a card table.

Funny you mention that. While I already knew a lot of people in my company, many more now will say hi when they see me. My boss saw my Halloween picture and encouraged me to dress and enter the work competition so it has become a win/win situation.

Of course, being a handsome devil to begin with doesn't hurt

It should not be that hard to figure out, being a foreigner i will make frequent spelling mistakes that i would not do in my native language (like most people) and then add the typos, sorry if it is causing you so much trouble.

Studies have showed that babies will be attracted to pictures of pretty faces, compared to more ugly/regular faces.
However, when being with a baby, your behaviour is prob more important, than your look.

I was hoping this conversation would discuss the merits of wearing a mask in the corporate environment.

Don`t know how many languages you write perfect, or if you never make any typos, but some of us don`t find that stuff all that important.

If it can make your day i am glad i could help

Daniel Hamermesh, a labor economist, has done several studies on the relationship between attractiveness and earnings. In general, he finds that people are penalized for below-average looks and rewarded for above-average looks. You can read the studies here: http://www.eco.utexas.edu/faculty/Ha...autystuff.html
