Applebee's is advertising "under 550 calorie" meals, which is easily the dumbest nutrition related campaign I've seen(non-Taco Bell Drive Thru Diet, obv).

Being under 550 calories is pretty common for a meal. It's a really high threshold that almost any combination of meat+vegetable can satisfy unless you put a lot of sauce on one of them. A Big Mac has around 550 calories.

It'd be like Burger King advertising a "Under $10!" value menu.

I like the Whopper. **** the Big Mac.

i have no idea why people wanted this, but it struck me as OOT elitism where anyone who doesn't fit in immediately needs to be expelled.

Burger King's fake Big Mac(with no third piece of bun, otherwise the same) was incredibly delicious but they took it off the menu. I think it was called the Big King? They probably got sued.

Seriously? It's extremely uncommon for a dinner served in a restaurant in U.S. and A afaik. And lol at comparing it to a Big Mac, as if that's all people eat when they go to McDonald's. A typical "meal" at McDonald's is a Big Mac, large fries and large soda, so about 12-1300 calories assuming it's regular soda.
01-02-2010 , 08:31 PM
It's just the entree, not the whole meal. Applebee's website is down for me, but their "550 calorie menu" looks like the same sort of (Chicken/Fish/Steak)+Side Dish combinations that you normally order from places like that.

Edit: Generally the reason people are fat is not "too many calories from entrees", it's "entree is responsible for <50% of caloric consumption per meal", as you note with the Big Mac example.

Don't be so used and abused and don't be like "FML"

*** her on your terms not hers. Don't get emotionally attached and be a little hard about it as if you don't care much. This is the best way not to be walked all over imo

I would guess for most people eating there those items are an improvement to their diet. I'd bet the average outback meal is like 1000 (without drinks). I don't know the applebees menu very well but i'd guess their average is at least 800.
01-02-2010 , 08:43 PM
Yeah, it prevents them from ordering onion rings and french fries as their two sides, but those all seem like pretty normal Applebee's menu items to me.

Well considering that a blooming onion is 2,200+ calories and 125+ grams of fat, 1,000 calories is probably a low estimate.

I prefer Chili's because they always have 2 for 1 drinks, unless I'm on the West Coast. In that case I prefer Sizzler so I can say "we goin' to Sizzler" over and over again on the way over.

That is not really a one person app but yah sure its probably 1200-1400 but i'm not going to bother looking at a menu.
01-02-2010 , 08:58 PM
fly: you are right that people who are fat don't usually have an issue with eating too much of an entree, but my thinking is that it's just to let people know where they stand, calorie-wise, and then making a promotion out of it. i'm not explaining this well, though.

This is much more effective if you add the line, "honey put on your GOOD flip-flops, We goin to Sizzler tonight!"

Forget which comic it was that said that, but the line always cracked me up.

On the list of the dumbest things ever...

They just used something called an e-coin in the liberty bowl for the OT coin toss. Its a computer program that does a coin toss. I demand that the man who decided the process of flipping a coin need to be improved upon, AND THEN CAME UP WITH A ****ING E-COIN, lose his job right this second.
01-02-2010 , 10:12 PM
Well to be fair, I'd bet a good percentage of people watching meaningless bowl games in a sport that votes on the best 2 teams rather than playing it out on the field might have a problem figuring out how to flip a coin

I banned sourdiesel for a day and told him he's not allowed in OOT anymore. Prediction: he makes a thread featuring horseporn or somesuch as soon as he returns.
