How nitty is it to comment more on a post's imprecision rather than that a chemical best suited to clean windows is being put into food.( and it's not even being listed as an ingredient!) Thats ****ing nitty!

BTW, here's a fact that should blow your mind: Americans get a full SEVEN PERCENT of their calories from soda. SEVEN PERCENT. That's HUGE. Imagine replacing seven percent of every meal you eat with soda. That's our national diet.

ammonium based compounds are used in the production/preservation of other foods as well this is nothing new, not really a big deal imo

Urban legend. There is no dead chicken in a McNugget.

According to the article I read they add it to beef to kill e coli but it may not actually work. Also we are talking pure ammonia, not some "-based compound". You may think no biggie and you are entitled to an opinion.

I think of the smell of my cat litter box and.... donotwant.jpeg ... in my food, particularly undisclosed.

You eat all sorts of disgusting stuff all the time. Living in the dorms cured me of my aversion to it. I was eating a Wendy's burger once and pulled a long curly black hair out of my mouth, after taking a bite. I took it out and kept going.

So sry, I'm not a scientist and had the impression from what I read it is pretty much ammonia. From this article:

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/12/31/us/31meat.html

Quote:
Eight years ago, federal officials were struggling to remove potentially deadly E. coli from hamburgers when an entrepreneurial company from South Dakota came up with a novel idea: injecting beef with ammonia.

It is still gross, unnatural, and unneccessary. IMO. ANd it should SO definitely be on the label!!!!

Cheers!

I'm upset they don't mention what kind of bacteria were isolated, although they do say G-R. Beyond that, these coliforms do not really indicate poop in the soda so the article is misleading in that respect. It's probably right that the plastic tubing is where they are (but not where they came from).

They're there as a biofilm which is going to be pretty hard to get rid of and keep away for any sustained period of time, which means although they only checked in Roanoke, they'd probably find the same result anywhere.

---

Regarding treating beef w/ ammonia -- trust me you'd much rather that than if they didn't treat it. The regulation in grind houses and their supply chains of beef shavings and pieces is so laughable. Without this treatment step it probably wouldn't be safe to eat ground beef at all.

I'd probably need to replace 50% of my soda with food to reach the average consumption.

I heard there's a chemical (dihydrogen monoxide) or something out there that is in virtually 99.9% of food you eat and also responsible of killing hundreds of people a year. I think there's an online petition going around which is going to be sent to the National Food Board requesting a ban for this use.

This is true.

It's present in large quantities in all fresh meat, fish, fruit and vegetables. It's also present in most processed foods.

Despite the fact that, as mentioned, it kills many hundreds of people each year there is still no restriction on it's use in foodstuffs.

Crazy!

Do you have a favorite beer at your regular bar that just doesn't taste right out of the bottle, instead of on tap?

Yeah, that's because the bar hasn't cleaned their draft lines in forever, so there's enough **** in there that it changes the flavor of the beer. Enjoy!
