I mostly ignore these deals, I am just not too interested in saving 80% on hair removal. However I love to save $5 or $10 at a places I frequent like Whole Foods, and hate missing those deals. So here is a PSA thread to keep OOT aware of deals that most would want to purchase.

For today, Amazon $10 for $5 gift card!

If this thread works out I'll post the "free maxim" stuff here instead of the LC thread. Another one I saw today was 20% off itunes GCs from best buy if you use digital delivery

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/iPod-MP3...d=abcat0201007

Scroll down to the digital cards $15 for $12, $50 for $40, $100 for $80 etc.

Thanks for the info, guys, got $25 for free ($5 for $10 Amazon card, $80 for $100 iTunes card).

Edit: Already received and redeemed the iTunes code, so I just got several apps or a book or two for free (for my iPad or iPod). Pretty sweet deal, to either use yourself or resell on eBay or whatever.

I am surprised there wasn't a thread like this before.

Thanks for amazon and iTunes deals.

Amazon code took longer to "process", but I received email notification of it and applied it to my account as well.

Easy free money if you use Amazon and iTunes.

Don't use Groupon. If you care at all about your local economy anyway.

Every single time I use a Groupon anywhere, I end spending at least a small amount more than teething is worth. Usually I end up spending a whole hell of a lot more.

This is like saying "don't ever use coupons or show up anywhere that spends money on advertising if you care about your local economy."

lol no. Groupons are not like coupons. Groupon, based in Chicago, takes at least 50% - and sometimes more - of all the profits a store makes off of the Groupons. Considering the goods or services are already heavily discounted, the company using the Groupon is seeing a sizeable loss in profits with at least half of the profits going to Groupon, based in Chicago and not going back into your local economy.

Of course, the idea is that you are sacrificing these dollars and letting them escape your neighborhood bc you are paying for access to Groupon's considerably vast network to bring in new customers in a way that a simple self-sponsored coupon or special could not. But the reality is so many of the Groupon users are existing customers, out of towners or people who just hop from Groupon to Groupon with no real intention of bringing their business back that it's not profitable for these business in the long run. And, like I said, these dollars are not being put back into your local economy.

While half the Internet spent the weekend poring through Groupon’s S1 filing and raised a lot of questions (and concerns), I called up a friend of mine for an extremely interesting chat instead. Ronan Perceval is the CEO of Phorest, the leading beauty salon appointment software company in the UK and Ireland. Their products are used both in salons (appointment management and CRM) and online (for consumer booking). So whenever a salon in the UK or Ireland runs a deal with Groupon, it most likely ends up being processed by Phorest’s software. Here’s what he had to say:

Only about 1% of Groupon users become regular customers.
Groupon represents about 50% of the deals run by our clients. It’s easily the most effective way to get hundreds or even thousands of people through the door of a salon with one day’s advertising. The problem is that the cost of sale doesn’t really add up for the salon owner. Generally a salon only needs to convert about 10% of Groupon buyers into regular clients for it to make financial sense but based on our internal data we’re only seeing conversion rates of about 1%. Think about that for a second. A salon with three staff sells a thousand deals and only ten of these come back again and pay normal prices. That’s over a thousand man hours (at least two months) of loss-making treatments to gain seven new clients.

Here's a good story from a bakery owner who used Groupon and it went horribly. Anecdotal, I know, and partially her own fault, but interesting nonetheless: http://posiescafe.com/wp/?p=316

Yeah, not to tard up this thread with info from that other one, but anecdotally, I know a couple who own a very successful restaurant, did a Groupon, and nearly went out of business and almost got divorced over the whole thing. Seems like it's usually a bad idea from the business's end.

$10 for $20 at Overstock.com today on Living Social. Make sure you check the fine print; you can't use it on electronics and some other things.

speaking of fine print, once bought a summer weekend in NH deal at some resort, but after buying it i saw the fine print which was very restrictive. i emailed and cancelled the whole thing and it was no problem, which i was pleasantly surprised by.

also, make sure you give living social your catch-all email address. they send multiple deals daily and just flood your box. she said that.

common sense here, I used to hate people that reduced their tips. If you had a coupon for a free meal would you not tip at all since 20% of 0 is 0?

i'd venture to quesstimate that well above 50% of people are ****wads who would never even consider leaving a tip on what would have been the full price, let alone be able to even figure that out.

and i think i'm being conservative.
