I always stay around Time's Square when I go for work, so I haven't branched out a whole lot from that area. I always eat at Ruby Foo's. Great Asian fusion place. Not a quiet place by an means, but good food and definitely not too loud to carry on a conversation. I'm sure there are a ton of people who can help you more than me who live there, but you didn't have a lot of replies so I hope this helps.

1) how much do you want to spend?
2) is there a chance that you'll get laid if you pick up this check?

was thinking around $200-300 (for 2 ppl). getting laid is not the point, just catching up with a good friend whom I haven't seen for a while

Not in Midtown but Gramercy Tavern (20th Street) is consistently rated one of the best restaurants in the city. It has a really nice but not-stuffy atmosphere that sounds like what you're looking for.

Probably tough to get reservations on short notice though (especially this week and next, which are "restaurant week" in NYC).

Second this. Phenomenal food. I still mourn the day the chef abandoned San Francisco for the east coast.

Mercer Tavern at the Mercer Hotel in Soho.
Bobbo in Greenwich Village. Ate there Thursday night and it was amazing.
Both will be less than your $200-300 unless you order wine.

Aquavit (E. 55th bet. Madison & Park) has outstanding food and, importantly for your criteria, the most serene dining room I've been to in Manhattan.

Aquavit is on 55th Street and therefore is below Central Park.
