what makes it even worse is i can only hear out of one ear and trying to pop my ears on a plane scares the **** out of me, i've experienced the whole ruptured eardrum thing and it was horrible, if it occurred in my good ear i would be ****ed
Yeah not being able to hear sucks, occasionally it will last for days...which really starts to get me scared. Thought I was gonna turn into James Stewart with the trick ear

To the "Chew Gum" sayers, it may work for some people...but it doesn't work at all for me. Sometimes one ear is "normal" where the gum chewing/jaw movement will work and the other ear is murder...pretty frustrating

i meant i have complete permanent loss of hearing in one ear so anything that messes with my good ear (concerts, this **** on airplanes etc) freaks me out because i'd rather not wear a hearing aid for the rest of my life.

I have had ear infections in the past and they are the worst thing ever. I had an infected/clogged eardrum that took a month to go away with antibiotics so I feel your pain. I have even had an ear infection brought on due to me flying after having strep throat. The doctor recommended that I use one of those nose sprays when on the plane before take off. He actually gave me a prescription for it so I could bring it on the plane with me. I ignored him and instead ate a painkiller for the flight and definitely felt the consequences when I landed.

i had a pretty bad cold/possible respiratory virus a couple weeks ago that lasted for about a week and towards the end of it the hearing in my right ear became extremely muffled and it lasted for almost 2 weeks. i was going to go to a doctor if it didn't begin to improve, however i dont have insurance (i know, i'm working on it..aka being lazy) so i kinda just let it run it's course. it's definitely subsided a fair amount, but fwiw i'm on a plane right now and i feel fine

I agree that if you have chronic ear problems gum won't do anything to help an ear situation on a plane. I would say pop sudafed beforehand, if you're feeling pain while flying take some advil or something. How long of a flight were you going to take? If you start with a short flight (1-3 hours) and see how that goes first than you can decide if the pain (if any) would be intolerable for a longer flight.

o - desperately needing an adventure and ready to try to make some changes. so i am going to stalk stabn. hope he doesn't mind.

actually i will prob be going to orlando FL first. to go visit my friend who has been trying to get me to come see her for awhile now. possibly other places too.

the thing that sucks is that flying out of green bay there are no nonstop flights and i'll have to make connection flights , so that means if the takeoffs and landings are painful i'll have to go through it even more ! ahh. oh well, hopefully it won't be too bad.
