Italian-American. But I'm not entirely convinced that recipe is necessarily ethnic (although the ricotta cheese filling is a good indicator).
There is another Easter cake in the family that is definitely Italian in origin. We call it La Paloma, and it is a towering, covered pie with layers of provolone, sopresata, salami, hardboiled eggs, basket cheese, and spices.
That is more work to make by far. My mother makes it, and I have made it myself, but I rely on her for it most years.
