I have a buddy of mine who is going on a trip with his father next week and he asked me to drive them to the airport. Now normally I wouldn't have a problem with this but I live about 20-25 miles away from him, add in another 20 to the airport and then another 10 back home so I'm looking at a trip of 50-60 miles.

My response to him was "are we currently ****ing and I don't know it?". I would have no problem doing this if we lived 5 or 10 miles apart but otherwise I wouldn't even ask someone myself to do that. I would just take a cab if I couldn't find someone pretty close to me.

He is acting sort of pissy with me now. I'm curious what everyone's thinking is regarding driving people to the airport. Am I wrong in this case?

Oh and I'll take under ten responses before someone posts the YouTube clip of Keith Hernandez asking Jerry to drive him to the airport on Seinfeld.

Well that's the kind of thing that happens when you have a buddy of yours

Cab 20 miles to airport sounds expensive.

If your friend doesn't ask you constantly for favors and stuff, stop making this out to be a huge thing. It's what friends do.

so you're saying your total distance driven would be about the same if you lived 5 or 10 miles from him, but it's unreasonable of him to ask you to drive this distance because you actually live closer to the airport than his place. your logic is flawless.

if you're planning on moving anytime soon, though, you should do this because he will owe you a day's worth of manual labour which you will only have to compensate with some pizza and a couple beers. it never hurts to have friends owe you favours. it also doesn't hurt to have friends.

Never hurts to have friend(s) that know you're there for them.

I will usually give a ride if a friend asks. Minor inconvenience for the ride giver to avoid a potential major inconvenience and cost for the ride getter. Especially if you live somewhere like Detroit which has 0 public transit options to the airport.

Has he/will he do this for you in the future?

If "yes", then of course you should do it. If the answer is "no" then I can understanding balking at the request.

That's nothing, when family or friends from out of town come visit me, they invariably expect to be met at the airport even though they know I don't have a car. All the planes run late at the airports around here too which means I get to mill around for an hour or two waiting for them. Sometimes they even let me spring for the cab ride back. People are abhorrent, deal with it.

Just drive him. He'll owe you a favor and I'm sure either he or his dad will give you some money.

I'd drive him. I've had a friend do it for me several times, I've done it for another friend several times. Our airport is close to nothing and would cost >$50 both ways in a cab if you could even find a cab to go out there. It is ****ing remote so that does make it an easy decision for me (mainly because I know I will need reciprocation at some point).

Friends don't calculate miles on rides for friends.

Maybe he's acting pissy because you declined his (reasonable imo, unless, as someone mentions above, he asks for stuff all the time) request for a favor. But maybe, just maybe, it is because of the dickish way you responded. If you actually said the "we're currently ****ing..." line, then his being pissy is not surprising at all.

At what mileage would you have said "No problem"?

op, do you keep a list of your "friends" in a spreadsheet with a ride mileage allotment column? you could also record a tally of drinks purchased and received and hours they spent hanging out at your place rent-free to ensure that no one is ever 1-up on you

This.

This probably just says something about my inclination towards charity of something, but the majority of my most selfless acts have involved airport drives/pick-ups. You get up at 3 AM to drive a friend in because they'll do the same for you.

As usual both OP and the friend are in the wrong. You don't ask for rides to the airport. If someone doesn't know that and asks you don't behave like a douche.

Its inconvenient but if he really is a buddy do it. Sounds like its not worth it to you so don't.

What, asking a friend to do you a favor is objectively "wrong"? Damn, I've had this all backwards for 46 years.

asking someone to do something that you know takes an hour+ out of their day when you have many commonly used alternatives is being a bad friend
