Someone else posted the google image search for "long john." The search suggests "long john donut." If you click the link the pic comes up.

I'm prepared to admit that at a Dunkin Donuts, ordering an eclair would get you the delicacy pictured in the OP. But at a DD it would be labeled, etc. At another regular place all bets are off.

On a side note, I went to tons of DD's in MA when I was back home and the employees there are universally pretty stupid. I'm not sure they know what an eclair is either.

There is no preparing for this. NSFW, NSFAnytime.

However, it is confirmation that lovers of food call these long johns.
I think I am in loooooooooooove. I have just sent this video to all of my friends. I hope they enjoy it as much as I did.

I think pretty much everyone I know would refer to that as an eclair.

FWIW, I don't think I knew that was technically not an eclair for whatever reason. Different types of eclairs from elsewhere are just slightly different foods that have the same name. Kind of similar to different types of tacos or different types of gorditas I guess.

Also similar to different types of ceviche in different countries where some Mexican trying Peruvian ceviche might say, "that's not ceviche...it doesn't have shrimp in it so it can't be ceviche" or something like that.

They probably don't even have donuts in those countries.

Savages.

Calling that donut an eclair is just wrong.

An eclair uses entirely different dough and has a different shape.

Just because they look somewhat alike doesn't mean they have the same name.

But ya, Daryn is right, it's basically a chocolate eclair donut, used in the manner that other flavors might be:

"chocolate" donut
"chocolate eclair" donut
etc...

I'm originally from Chicago so this is easily a Long John to me, but even if I came from a different region calling it a plain eclair just sounds weird.

I also want to note that El D has a healthy obsession with fried dough, as witnessed by this thread:

bonds - I just investigated this important situation.

My GF informs me that they now have a Dunkin Donuts in Lima, Peru. She said that indeed they would not have known of regular donuts as you and I know them before that though. They have picarones which are kind of fried donuts (in a way) where you drizzle syrup on them or something. I think I'll pass:

That looks like fried biscuit dough, which just happens to be the most delicious thing ever.

Made of squash or sweet potato? No thanks. Buñuelos, however, are probably delicious.

I think they look pretty sloppy and sticky although probably tasted okay since it's hard for fried dough to not taste okay. I'm not a big syrup guy either so that's part of it too I guess.

In China they deep fry buns and serve them with condensed milk.

My wife, born and raised in Houston, said she'd call it a "filled bar". She scoffed at anyone calling it an "eclair".

I still can't fathom how something soft can be called a "bar" of any sort. We'll probably divorce.

I disagree. ItalianFX is so remarkable that it was HIS thread that brought ElD out of hiding for crying out loud. If that doesn't show some amount of magical powers and awesomeness I don't know what does.
