I think it will be fun. I know I couldn't participate unless I was willing to eat plain rice for five of the seven days but after topics / conversations like these the GF and I have tried stuff like living on $30/day for food and they are fun for a couple of days. The reason I don't think younger people could go a week on forgotten food is simply that they don't tend to own freezers or sub-zero fridges with massive storage. Even if I had time to prepare for this I think the max I could fit in the freezer part of my fridge is two weeks worth of food and that would mean not having ice or any type of frozen desert type of stuff wasting space.

Henry, you might be surprised. I know that you eat a lot more meat than I do because of your dietary preferences, but I can fit quite a bit into the freezer of our standard apartment-issue refrigerator. In a way, it may arguably be easier to forget food because it sinks to the back/bottom, instead of having an easy organizational system like I'd have room for in a proper deep-freeze.

Just this weekend I found some beautiful pork tenderloin that I'd forgotten was there. I had purchased 2 tenderloins when they were marked down from $6/lb to $2/lb and never used them.

exactly...i have a small freezer (my fridge one, i dont have a deep freeze) and i know theres at least a dozen odds and ends protiens in there. Not to mention that the week in question would have at least 1-2 vegetarian meals/soups.

to make it more realistic it will probably be just dinners fwiw.

For a lot of 9 to 5 4k a month office drones, the life of a 4k a month poker player travelling the world is an unattainable dream. Even if they could get the time off, they would be losing money while travelling. In that sense it is "baller," but you are right, it is pretty much one step above backpacking.

Sounds pretty vile, I can't imagine you'd eat well with restrictions like that. I pretty much pop over everyday to my local shop for fresh stuff.

theres nothing wrong with buying meat thats frozen...if you dont go grocery shopping more than once a week you'll be freezing food anyway or throwing it out.

I think you are confusing your own personal preferences with something being baller. Travelling on a shoe-string budget is not baller. (I feel ******ed for using that term so many times in one thought)

I'm not sure if I would call it "wrong" but it is certainly less desirable.

I have never met him but based on what I know that is a pretty funny question. For people who eat meat-centric diets the 3.5-4oz servings are kind of a joke. A typical meal for my GF and I involves way over a pound of meat and very little of anything else. Eating a lot of meat isn't going to make you fat as much as eating a big plate of pasta with a little meat.

it depends on a lot of things but yes depending on several factors it does. that being said id be willing to bet that at least half of oot couldnt tell the difference between a fresh and frozen steak if its frozen and thawed properly.

I think the primary difference is with texture and maybe taste, but AFAIK there is no nutritional difference since they are quick frozen and done so pretty quickly after slaughter and/or harvest. However, if this is incorrect I'd love to know why.

You don't understand the thermic effect of food or the sating effect of protein. High protein consumption (IE much higher than RDA) has numerous dietary benefits wrt body composition. So while "A calorie is a calorie" is true in a sense... It is most certainly not true when you actually consume them and account for what your body does with them.

But you almost certainly knew that.

wtf does eating better mean. Freezing your meat lowers the quality of it. Buying non-fresh seafood/meat EVEN IF THEY WERE THE EXACT SAME CUTS are lower quality inherently.

If you want to argue some pointless, I eat better because I'm a chef. Okay great. You eat lower quality food if you're eating frozen meat. Its not a debatable topic. Sure you can try to argue the merits of frozen meat. In which case virtually everything you'd argue would apply to eating dogfood, or freeganism.

NB: There are laws regarding frozen meat. I'm sure these were created because frozen meat is of the same quality as fresh.

theres not.
...and actually id also be willing to bet that no one itt has ever had actual "fresh" beef considering its illegal to sell anything considered "green" meat. (it has to be aged at least somewhat to remove some sort of toxin) the fresh/frozen debate isnt as black and white as most stuck-up foodies make it out to be....but i dont blame them...i was one of them and to a point still am.

unless you consistently can't afford ANY food or a place to stay at all, you're not poor by any reasonable definition of the word. theres a big difference between poverty and living beyond your means.

Thremp, what exactly is the quality difference? I am asking purely out of curiosity since I had never heard there was any difference other than texture. If thats all you mean, fine, but I don't see how thats more beneficial when price is considered. Most frozen meat is quick frozen and doesn't have any preservatives in it. It has the same amount of nutrients too (might even have more actually).

FWIW I usually always buy fresh, but I will buy a bag of frozen chicken breast/thighs from time to time.
