I don't see why the answer to the OP's question is any more complicated than that she married Prince Philip. That she did a reasonable amount of good in her life helps, but that's not the major reason.
She married Prince CHARLES, not his father Prince Philip.

The fact that she's a lot better looking than most Royals helped things a bit too. But it's not like she was merely famous for being famous. She was famous for being a Royal.
Being a royal has no function outside of being famous these days. Saying your famous because you're a royal is tautological. You're famous for being genetically famous.

Do you people even know what she did. She wasn't some snob who just partied, she did probably more humanitarian work than anybody else in her time. That makes her hero in my book

LOL. She probably did less than 99.9% of anybody in the peace corps or working inner city social programs. But they aren't married to British royalty.
Exactly. Except your figures are far too generous toward Diana.

No, just despise the cult-like adoration toward her. I love Grace Kelly as an actress and she's worth any man's undying lust, but I despise the very similar worship for her when she became a princess too. You have people saying things like these women were the most important women in a thousand years, deserve sainthood, etc. All kinds of crazy crap.

The poster who said any old jack or jill in the peace corps, and by extension so many other people doing good things in the world, contributed infinitely more towards others than these princesses. The adoration of royalty, even here in America where one would think we would know better, gives me the creeps big time and makes it clear why we'll always be looking for someone to be king.

I don't necessarily agree with this. Diana, through her philanthropy, has used her power of influence in a positive way that Peace Corps randoms cannot. That is a good thing. It's like what Bono is doing with Africa - can't you see that he's trying to help the BEST way he knows how? Him meeting with heads of state and getting press is >>>>> for a particular cause than anything else he could be doing.

I've already posted in this thread that I thought the worship for her was bizarre. But to dismiss her efforts as trivial because she didn't get her fingernails dirty is ridiculous.

I don't buy the idea that people loved her for her charity work. She was a celebrity, a young attractive woman who married a prince. That was the source of her allure.

This was the main reason I hated the movie "The Queen". The idea was, "These people don't get it. They don't understand how important Diana was." I don't think she was important.

Now for some pertinent Mojo Nixon lyrics, from his song Drunk Divorced Floozie(The Ballad of Diana Spencer):

"She's just a jet set party girl, gone to meet her maker. That nobility crap don't stop the undertaker".

I was just looking at the People Magazine tribute to her. She's not as attractive as I remembered. Her nose was fairly big and he hair looked terrible until she shortened it. That said, she was still fairly attractive and dressed very well (being forced to dressed relatively conservatively because of her title and having basically limitless clothing funds can do that for a woman).

Even by OOT standards, she's at least a 6. In real world standards, somewhere between a 7 and an 8.
