Germany also has a low Fertility Rate (1.36 children per woman), and a low number of children in the overall population.

chicks in euroland and japan should lay off the birth control and make babies while the sun of their uterus shines.

yes, the average Japanese worker is far more productive than the average African worker. A look at GDP per capita of these two regions shows us this unambiguously.

Birth control (at least as far as the pill goes) is not widely used in Japan. The pill has actually only been legal there since around 1999. I think it was actually legalized after Viagra (fastest drug approval in JLand ever afaik).

There is still a negative stigma and comparative lack of education/understanding around it

In short--moving out is the expensive part.

Land prices in Japan, though nowhere near their highs in the early 1990s, are still scarily high compared to those in the US or even most of Europe. It's almost impossible to save up for a house (especially since payments tend to be much larger percentage-wise then they are elsewhere) and even for people who rent, the expense gets passed along.

Incidentally, the link you posted is five years old (2006). A couple of years ago they had their first rise in birth rates in decades, but I don't know if it has been sustained.

I feel like we already have too many people on the planet, so this is a good thing.

Japan's cash incentive for parenthood

You will see a lot more of this in western countries.

What is up with these charts and the missing age groups? 0-4 and then jumps to 10-14. Did I miss something?

My guess is that the 5-9, 15-19, etc bars are on the graph but just not labeled.

Here is another pop pyramid of this same data.

Oh you're totally right. I just got distracted by the labels and wasn't even looking at the graph anymore.

Is it possible that, hear me out, birthrates in Japan are declining because, just hear me out, a large percentage of the female population is unable to get pregnant because they are actually not real women at all, but rather, hear me out, high functioning sex robots?

Kinda hard to reproduce when you can't even tell what's going on down there.
