Susannah's split personality is half Uncle Tom, half Black Panther. She spends most of her time in Drawing of the Three calling Roland a honky, and it crops back up throughout the rest of the series.

Detta, the other half of Susannah, is written in such a cringing patois that it's honestly a little difficult for me to read and an eyeroll every time she "slips" back into it in the series.

BJ,

I've got no qualm whatsoever about them excising that bit for an adaptation, and agree that the split personality thing doesn't matter to the series overall. That's part of the reason it's so annoying: in later books, it's basically like Popeye's spinach. "Oh, I need extra focus or strength or whatever, let me just slip back into this character."

However, you'd have to agree that Detta is 50% of Susannah's time on the page in Drawing, right? That book is pretty short, so maybe it's 100 pages of 300 instead of 150, whatever. It's a big part of the book, is the main point. Whether that should have anything to do with a movie adaptation is a matter of opinion.

On the other hand, I'd call someone an absolutely massive moron if they remembered Detta being furious at Roland but didn't remember it having to do anything with race. That would indicate a serious misreading of the text.

In the "new" Hollywood, Susannah will be played by Sofia Vergara and her split personality will be that of a Korean grocer (voiced by Margaret Cho) who is mistrustful of Roland because he is black, so that element of the story will be maintained.

“[The movie] starts in media res, in the middle of the story instead of at the beginning, which may upset some of the fans a little bit, but they’ll get behind it, because it is the story,” King says.

Arcel declined to specify which books his movie focus on, but he did offer this clue: “A lot of it takes place in our day, in the modern world.”

In the article Stephen King even said he was thinking of Clint Eastwood when he created Roland, so yea. It also mentions the racial tension between Susannah and Roland, which will have to be edited.

I think there could have been better choices for Roland, but I'm sure they will figure it out and make it work.

Yea this movie is very obviously going to be terrible, but I'm still incredibly excited because I'm loving the books (finished the first 4 so far) lol. I still get nonzero pleasure out of watching big screen adaptations of things I like, even when they're bad.

I think MM will do a great job.

It sounds like they're skipping 99% of the 1st 2 books. If that happens then this will be just another ****ty adaptation of King's work.

I like Idris but watching him play a role that was obviously written for/as a white male is too much. I'm all for diversity but there has to be a point when common sense takes over.

I have a semi-aversion to seeing adaptations I've read. They don't interest me in most cases. I'd prefer they do things differently, but so many people just want an exact translation.

And yea King had Eastwood in mind, but so what? That was like 44 years ago. We don't need another story about a white grizzled masculine Western hero. Frankly would be more interesting if they changed it to a woman and told the same story, while purposely avoiding any reference to the fact that a character like that isn't normally a woman.

Lol jfc. There's nothing inherent in the role that requires him to be white. People are so goddamn dumb.

So here's a thought. Idris speaks in his normal accent which lines up with descendants of Arthur Eld British wise. Then detta can be ****ty at him just because he's an accented honky? Maybe? There's nothing more an angry Black Panther hates than an Uncle Tom? Just spitballing.

Why do you have to insult every time you post? You saying you're right and everybody else is wrong is just lol. Everybody is entitled to their opinion.

For the record, you appear to be alone on your view. Is there any chance at all that you are wrong?

Only 4 books in again, but I definitely 100% agree with BJ.

Roland was obviously white in the books, and it was a very minor plot point that there was racial tension between him and Detta, but that is easy to overcome (just like loosekanen points out). You could take the position of, "why make unnecessary change to the book?" but by the time this hits the screen it will probably be nearly unrecognizable as originating from the books anyway. Roland being black will be the least of the changes, if they aren't even starting off the movie from book one.

As an aside, it has been a few years since I read the books, so I went back to wikipedia and read the plot summaries for all of them. Those summaries really drive home how great the early books were, and how off the rails the series went towards the end.

Spoiler:
About the only thing I like about the last couple books is the way the series ended. Time is a flat circle.

I recall not being at all crazy about 2 because it was too real world-y with cheesy real world characters instead of all these strange Mid-World people that didn't quite make sense.

4, 1
3, 7, 5
2, 6

I try to only be insulting when people are being legit bad people. Obviously imo you are a bad person if you don't like changes for adaptations. :-\

"The Man in Black" is literally Randall Flagg, so I expect you'll like him.

Also, here's a spoiler-tastic take from a friend of mine after reading about the setup for the new movie:

Spoiler:
Tirana is one of the Low-men/Regulators (I think she is actually Can-toi). She barely shows up in the book, as one of the people when they are trying to rescue the Breakers.

I actually kind of think it makes a lot of sense to tell as story from the outset that mixes up the order of the books. The Gunslinger would be an exceptionally slow movie (don't forget that that book is all A) flashback B) them hanging out at the weigh station or C) them walking or riding under a mountain). It would also be really confusing and unsatisfying to people that would see Jake die at the end but couldn't just move the next book and have him "come back".

But, it doesn't make that much sense to just have a move that is sort of trying to press The Gunslinger and The Drawing of the Three together. That would just get really disjointed. They've got to figure out a way to mix in a lot of the stuff on the Beams and the Breakers, most of which you don't get to until you are in The Wastelands. If they do this first movie correctly, and open up at least a little to parts of the Dark Tower Universe, they could create a "world" of TV shows/movies/etc.

I mean, ****, think about how much stuff gets left out of Harry Potter books, which are much less complicated and have much less content (both in terms of # of pages and subject matter) than the Dark Tower Books. It would probably take 15 movies (or 10 and 5 seasons of TV) to get 75% of the story told. That doesn't even account for a lot of the deep dive stuff that you can get into to explore some of the subjects that are very much expanded in other books (like the Low Men/Breakers in Hearts in Atlantis, Pere Calahan in Salem's Lot, The Regulators/Can-Toi in Desparation and The Regulators, etc.)

With Stephen King being so involved, I'm not that worried; unlike Drumpf, he actually knows what he is doing.

saw7988,

He associated "Low Men," "breakers," and "Can toi," without any explanations of the relationships between them (I'd never thought about Dark Tower and can-toi, interesting). Which would be speculative in any case. So you're fine to click on that spoiler.

I loved 4 and thought 5 was great as well. Considering 4 came out closer to the end than the start, I wouldn't agree the early books were great in contrast to the later. Also really liked Wind Through the Keyhole, which should definitely be considered a later DT work.

Wizard and Glass was indeed great. I was ok on Wolves. Guess it was just the last two that disappointed me, and despite that I liked the ending of 7. I really can't even imagine it ending any other way. I could have done without Mordred and Dandelo though.
