Of course, Five Guys is also overpriced.

We need In-N-Out.

The size of the burger at Shake Shack is comparable to that of In-N-Out Burger. I'll take Five Guys (even though it seems so much more unhealthy) over those two and Ray's over all of them.

My close friend's cousins own Thunder Burger on M Street and it is comparable to Ray's. Two of the best burger joints in the DC area.

Yelp says that Akosombo is closed. Can anyone confirm/deny?

I think that Fogo, for what it is, is excellent. If you like red meat, you want a lot of it, and you want to pay a reasonable price for it, I can't think of anywhere better to go. If you go at lunch, there are no high-fivin' 23-yr-olds and it's like $10 or $15 cheaper than dinner for the same exact food.

Agree, lunch at Fogo is pretty good value. When I worked at J Edgar, we would go there every few months. Never saw anybody order a Red Bull. I do think for dinner it's a bit overpriced though.

I can't believe Blue Duck Tavern isn't getting more props. The food there is awesome.

One place I always wanted to go to more but didn't was DC Chophouse. I went there once for lunch and thought it was pretty good.

Blue Duck Tavern is solid fine dining, but I wasn't blown away. Definitely the best venison I recall ever having, though.

I also like DC Chophouse. Not one of my favorites, but still very good. Here's a fun tip: have good beers @ Iron Horse next door and order food from DC Chophouse to take into Iron Horse for your meal. (Iron Horse allows food to be carried in because it does not have a kitchen.) You'll get 10% off @ DC Chophouse.

will get that next time. steak and eggs were good, brioche doughnut french toast was exactly as amazing as it sounds

at birch and barley brunch, get the chicken and waffles. the chicken is maple flavored (not syrupy) and is pretty much the best chicken I've ever tasted

Tabard Inn has an awesome brunch. I imagine it's good for all meals. Nice atmosphere too. Brunch reservations must be made three or four weeks in advance tho.

Why is Palena not in the burger discussion? Went there for lunch intent on eating the chicken that the reviewers rave about, but when they said it would be 45 min or something I went with the other item Id seen good reviews for. One of the best Ive had. Fries not bad either.

Wow, totally disagree. Maybe I caught them on a bad day but it was not any better than any of the other mid-level burger places. EDIT: and, obviously imo, a notch or two beneath Hellburger.

Sir, I will take you up on this challenge.

I will try to base this off of the standard burger size, no cheese. All prices are based on the Washington, DC area.

FIVE GUYS:
Little Hamburger ( like a single ) = 6.0oz = $3.09 = $0.52/oz
Hamburger (actually a double though): = 9.3oz = $4.59 total = $0.49/oz
Regular fries (enough for 2 orders) = 8.6oz = $2.29 total = $0.27/oz

SHAKE SHACK:
Hamburger ( not confirmed ) = 4.0oz = $3.75 = $0.93/oz
Double Hamburger ( not confirmed ) = 8.0oz = $5.75 = $0.72/oz
Fries ( unknown size ) = $2.75, easily half or 1/3 of what five guys provides at a cheaper price.

IN 'N OUT - anyone want to fill this in? I've never had their food, so can't weigh in on quality.

All the other places mentioned I considered fancier burgers that don't quite fall into the cheap chain categor)

Having trouble finding exact patty weight for shake shack, but the 4oz number keeps coming up in my searches.

Regardless, if prices were the same, I'd still take Five Guys. It's just tastier. I will say though that I always feel kind of gross afterwards. The nice thing about Shake Shack is that they are kind of snackable burgers. I actually find them somewhat similar to McDonalds.

I don't think there are any in DC proper (Old Town Alexandria has one though) but Hard Times Cafe is a great local chili chain. Never been to Ben's Chili Bowl so I can't say how it compares, but I like it a lot.

Yeah this is my main beef (ha) with Five Guys as well. Tastes great but it just feels way too unhealthy and gross.
