I saw this news article last night and had to get to the bottom of it. At first glance, it seems statistically impossible that the Delta variant could kill 4 healthy people from the same church all under the age of 35, when the UK's latest data from Friday August 6th still has it at a 0.0% case fatality rate in people under the age of 50. If true, this would strongly suggest Covid has mutated in Jacksonville into something much deadlier for young people.

However, after spending time going through the pastor's social media, the church's Facebook, and Jacksonville area obituaries for the last 14 days, I came to the conclusion that the pastor is lying about these deaths.

I challenge anyone to prove me wrong on this. It's very important we get this right, because if Covid has mutated to become so deadly for young people that it killed 4 young healthy people all from the same church, that changes everything.

A sample size of 4 young, healthy people dying within 10 days of each other strongly suggests that Covid has mutated in Jacksonville?

If you search for Table 4 here, you'll see the CFR for Delta, which overstates fatality rate by not accounting for many asymptomatic/mild infections, is 0.0%. Four healthy people under the age of 35 who go to the same church dying of Covid is more than a statistical outlier, it's a statistical impossibility.

Again, I challenge you to prove that this pastor isn't lying. I did the work of grinding through obituaries, now you do the work to prove me wrong.

The unwillingness to acknowledge subject matter expertise is a broad problem in the United States. Whether it's nutrition, medical issues, or whatever, you are bombarded in the United States with admonishments to "do your own research."

But for 99% of people, "doing your own research" means typing a few words into the google search bar and scanning for results that either reinforce your fears or otherwise confirm what you wanted to hear.

I'm not sure how to alleviate this problem, but banning advertisements for prescription drugs would be a good place to start. It's absurd that we encourage people to do their own research about medical issues and then pester their doctors to prescribe a specific medication.

Table 4 of the UK document you linked shows 74 Delta-variant deaths out of 265,749 hospitalized cases below the age of 50, over a six month period. The current full-vaccination rate of the UK is 75%. In Florida, the rate of full-vaccination in Duval county (where church is located) is 44%. Thus the mortality numbers aren't comparable and 4 deaths of young people is nowhere near a statistical impossibility.

I have no idea if the pastor is lying or not. That claim is tangential to your statistical claim.
