My supervisor gave a little speech to the rank and file today. If you have coronavirus you will be quarantined and the time you miss will be paid administrative leave, not PTO. Seems great imo. Also, management on high has decreed that coming to work sick is now over. If you have a cold or anything you are expected to stay home until completely healthy. Round or be rounded on is over. Coughing at work is going to get you sent home.

This is Minnesota so being sick for half the year is pretty normal. It's still winter. We'll see how it goes.
We have the same set-up at our company for anyone who has traveled to those countries or has potential symptoms and who can't work from home (people who work on the factory floor or supervise people, etc). Except that it isn't being widely publicized so it isn't taken advantage of.

Runny nose is not a common symptom of Covid-19. You almost certainly don't have it unless you've got a secondary cold/flu infection on top of it.

Fever (87%) and a dry cough (63% or so) are the top two symptoms seen in Covid-19.

SXSW is always described in terms that are very different than what I saw.

Sure, there are some international people, but it's nowhere near the magnitude you would see in Miami.

According to this reddit thread runny nose is not one of the symptoms. https://www.reddit.com/r/China_Flu/c...erts_to_china/

I am aware it isn't one of the symptoms. But being sick at work at this time will just get more people treating you weird/odd/strange. So I tried to avoid it.

Just show them your runny nose up close as proof you don't have it. Wipe it on them if necessary.

Wonder when the first case of a flight passenger declaring "I have the corona" will be heard of. Before they would have 'jokingly' said there was a bomb, now that's about to be updated. Also wackos need to follow the time.

- I have the corona! Cough cough

still a week away though, and fears are still growing - still could be cancelled.

It isn't an event that can just be canceled like a concert at MSG, or even the Olympics. There's that motorcycle race at the beginning of April when a bunch of Euros and Asians inundate Austin too. I don't have the answers, but the President says not to worry.

SXSW injects way too much money into the Austin economy to drop it. Cursory search shows it brought $350M in 2018. The entire tourism industry is about $9B / year in that town.

Regardless, 6th street on any given Friday or Saturday has a mass of bodies that you have to see to truly comprehend. The city can't shut down that street.

I'm in Tenn and Kroger, Target , and Walgreens all sold out of hand sanitizer - got some disinfectant wipes but they were and going fast. Also, 91% alcohol also sold out - only 70% available for do it yourself sanitizer. Clerk said Kroger got a shipment of hand sanitizers in last night and some bastard bought every one.

Yeah all the hand sanitizer is getting snatched up by insiders before it even hits the shelves.

70% is more effective than 91% and is what you should get anyways.

I wonder when Ticketmaster and stubhub are going to start selling them.

Flying in an hour and spent the day looking for hand sanitizer, hit up 8 stores until I stopped at a gas station that had one travel size hand in stock. That's probably the last one here in a 20 mile radius.

Doesn't matter really since my kids are going to be the ones to get me. Kid said several of his classmates were out with fever and they spent all day disinfecting everything in the classroom.

If all else fails, you can douse your body in Axe body spray. It'll keep people away from you, and I'm sure it has enough alcohol in it to kill all sorts of viruses.

Zinc lozenges apparently could help keep the virus from replicating in your throat. Before it gets to your lungs.

I'm saving all of zinc and copper to make potato flashlights.

Working from home for basically the rest of the month
That sounds like a good thing but I feel vastly more efficient in the office. Hopefully all the wfh here in the Seattle area helps with the spread but I expect to see a few local restaurants/bars etc that we're teetering on the edge close because of it.

They are going the way of hand sanitizer however.
