I went out last night. I saw no masks and the night seemed as normal and lively as any given Tuesday.

If there is any ground-zero here in La La Land, it would have to be my filthy and populous area of the city or Hollywood, right?

Meanwhile my work (university in LA) continues its policy that you have to pretend to be sick to wfh. So no one knows who's really sick and who isn't. But we're all "sick" a couple dozen times a year.

Then when you get back everyone passively-aggressively asks you if you're ok, even though we all know it's probably a lie. Why exacerbate the shame?

A little piece of me dies inside every time I go through it. This is how you get the Soviet Union.

I don't see any you can actually buy on walmart.com. Everything is either out of stock or magically becomes out of stock when you try to buy it.

Walmart also seems to have some 3rd party gouging going on as well.

This isn't really price gouging in the conventional sense. This is just a weird everyday thing on Amazon. There are people who write bots that post listings for literally every product on the site at absurd prices. They don't have any stock. They're just freerolling on the chance that someone will buy something from them and then they'll fulfill your order by purchasing the product from wherever at a normal price. The listed prices are insane because they don't want to get stuck having to do actual work or operate a real business.

Can you really not imagine caring about someone other than yourself?

My supervisor gave a little speech to the rank and file today. If you have coronavirus you will be quarantined and the time you miss will be paid administrative leave, not PTO. Seems great imo. Also, management on high has decreed that coming to work sick is now over. If you have a cold or anything you are expected to stay home until completely healthy. Round or be rounded on is over. Coughing at work is going to get you sent home.

This is Minnesota so being sick for half the year is pretty normal. It's still winter. We'll see how it goes.

We still have that in Slovakia, except there is now an upper limit on the number of sick days per year (apart from going onto social security as long-term sick).

The smart move is to plan your kids at the appropriate intervals so the 3 year maternity leave just keeps restarting. My wife worked somewhere for 2 years, then was on maternity for 6 years and she got her job back when the youngest went to nursery school.
