i think i'm going to set a thread world record today - cheapest steak featured itt

wasn't planning on buying a steak when i popped into albertson's for a half dozen diet dr. pepper 2 liters, but i had to check out the meat aisle, as this location always has a deal going - i can't remember the last time i paid more than $7.99/lb for a steak, and usually get out of there for $5.99/lb

found this bad boy underneath a stack of funky strips with $2 off coupons -

the fine print in orange reads "this product was sold with a $4.00 off coupon"

$1.38 steak? freaking fabulous!

decided to render the side on low until i got enough fat in the pan then raised the temp to medium, flipped every 30 secs until the crust looked acceptable, then rested in a 170* oven for 10 minutes

here's the results -

no idea why it gave up so much juice while resting :???:

was it the best steak i've ever had? no - but it was worth every freaking penny

obligatory EMC (wasn't satisified enough to get up and take it under better lighting)

anybody else got a submission in the sub $2/lb category?

Kinda hard to criticize a $1.38 steak imo.

The only thing that comes to mind is, "well done"...

Steak in pack looks not bad, sick deal. And I don't think the inside looks bad. But man, a little sear on it would be nice!

yeah, it was past where i'd like it to be, but with it being a $1.38 steak, it seemed like a perfect opportunity to experiment - i typically do the "warm it up in a low low oven, set the cast iron to screaming hot, put it in there, wait a minute, flip, wait another minute, rest" method

It looks freakin' amazing for $1.38! Absolutely looks edible — just couldn't resist the 'well done' double-entendre!

although lately I've been getting the poter house cause you get a nice hunk of tenderloin any way the rest of the meat is great and its only 10.99/p

he should probably get some kind of thread medal of honor for buying it, taking it home, cooking and eating. I've seem them in the bargain bin before, 2 and 3 coupon severely price reduced steak, but have never been brave enough to actually take one even to check out to cook for my dog.

Every once in awhile I'll find some lone NY strip at kroger, cut thick (1-1.5"), looks perfectly normal and good, out in the coolers with all of the normally thin cut steaks. This is as opposed to where the thick cut normally sit behind the counter. And it'll be marked as being individual Manager's Special $4.99/lb, a nice discount from normal 7.99sale prices or 9.99 normal price.

I figured they were cut for somebody who changed their mind or something so they had to mark it down to move it.

First time I saw one i snap bought it, cooked it and it was awful. Second time i saw it, i figured, ok, 1 more try, maybe i just did something wrong. Still awful.

So now when i see them, i assume its been dropped it on the floor or something worse and i stick to the normal or regular sale price steaks.

Think I'm going to pick up some prime new york strips when I'm in town today to see if I'm as rusty as I think I am.

can't really talk crap about a $1.38 steak but I have just about given up on cooking steaks from Fry's, Kroger, Albertsons, Safeway, etc....the quality never seems to justify the price unless they are some kind of super deal.

as I have harped repeatedly....if you love steak (which I assume we all do) please do yourself a favor and purchase all meat from Costco for overall value/quality. I have never ever had a bad steak from there. Obviously if you have a lot of cash and can afford the Whole Foods/High End Butcher then you might find a little better quality but that's debatable and you'll pay and arm and leg for it.

Let's see if I can keep the ball rolling.

BEFORE I BEGIN I just want to say that I am currently staying with family while I look for a place back in Illinois, so all my cooking stuff is boxed up. My equipment for this meal was 2 nonstick skillets, a not very good knife and a weird electric stove. That said, here we go.

Found a place in Champaign, Illinois that carries prime steaks. Picked up a few strips for $16.99/lb.

After what I thought might be too long, post sear in brown butter.

Found this stuff recently. It's ****ing amazing. Truffle oil is a total ripoff, get this stuff.

Rested, carved.

Sauteed up some potato slices and onions. The truffles' aroma wafting up was absolutely incredible.

I think the bands are too big but otherwise I'm really happy with it, especially with a setup I'm not comfortable with and subpar equipment to work with.

gobbo, that is easily in the top 10 of the thread with a great chance at top 5...just perfect all around imo

great cut of meat, perfect crust and perfectly cooked interior.

you could serve that steak cooked like that at any high end steakhouse in a second...unreal that you said you didn't even have your normal tools

Looks incredible Gobbo.

I'm going to have to order some of that Casina Rossa Truffle & Salt (4.6 out of 5 on Amazon), looks like a nice little extra something.

Cooking steak is easy. It's the fries that are a pain in the ass.

If you have an hour to spare, this recipe is a must, as it produces the best god damned fries I've ever eaten.

ob. steak pic, standard rare-side-of-medium-rare small filet:

the fries were so good I honestly forgot I'd made steak for a minute.
