"fried" noodles, you just throw the noodles in hot water for like 3 minutes, drain them. Combine sauce and spice pack in a bowl, mix in noodles, eat. Add egg (hard boiled, poached, scrambled, fried, omelette cut into stripes, whatever) green onion or some other cheap toppings for variety. Cilantro or bean sprouts are great. Obv can't go wrong with chicken meat. Chillies, hot sauce, dark sweet soy sauce, crushed peanuts.

You're probably in the US but I can imagine it's similar there - go to Asian / ethnic grocery stores and check out the frozen proteins. Might be of questionable origin but you can find big whole shrimp, those super thin beef slices, fish filets for dirt cheap. Whole fish too but that probably falls under "cooking" although they should have pre seasoned fish you can just throw in the oven.

Ready made (microwave) meals made for the Indian or Thai marked if they have them are decent for your money too and better than what most take out places offer, can eat as is or stretch with stuff.

That sounds amazing tbh.

El D,

Definitely give it a try if you like tomato. It's a delicious extra if you ask me. A few sausages on the side never goes astray either!

Sardines are a tasty cheap stand-in for tuna in sandwiches and whatnot. Stretch it with mayo, crackers, boiled eggs, onions, sriracha etc.

I put salt and pepper on the eggs towards the end but didn't salt the frozen veggies because I didn't want any more liquid in the pan than I was going to get from the tomatoes. I've taken left overs to work as lunch on dry toast (who has time for refrigerated butter) and it is was great.

I only use that much water if I am putting them in the pan while still frozen. If they are partially thawed I use less.

Amoeba,

I've done the frozen trader joes ones a lot in the past and they come out great with far less water. I imagine it's just a matter of taste re: how steamed you want them. But you definitely don't need much water to cook them through. Like OT, I only use enough to cover the bottom of the pan.

Campbell's Chunky Soup + Rice

The rice absorbs all the soup stuff. Can turn one can into 2 or 3 meals.

Obvious answer is ramen - but stick to the stuff imported from Asia. Domestic instant ramen is the nut low.

One of my favorite items to use is Italian sausage. You can grill it whole with peppers and onions, slice it and cook with peppers and onions then cover with some marinara. Crumble it in a pan with some garlic and pepper flakes, add kale and broth, finish with cream and you essentially have the Olive Garden Zuppa Toscano.

If you want to impress a date, Do the same thing as above except replace the stock with a bit of white wine, replace the kale with some sliced fennel and tomatoes, drop in a pound of mussels and cook until mussels open. Mussels probably one of the most affordable and delicious shellfish around.

Not bad, but dutch babies are the winner breakfast in that scenario.

If you are rich, you can toss some berries on there too.

you ever made a sausage and peppers omelette or scrambled? its the nuts. just grill the sausage peppers in olive oil add the garlic and white onions a little later so they cook evenly. take it out and pour the egg mixture thats got parmesan and oregano in it and put the stuff back on it, top with more parm, and fold it up. or just do it scrambled style.

Trader Joe's potstickers are legit and you get ~24 for $3-something.

My go to sauce is a quick and dirty soy, rice vinegar, sriracha mix that has a lot of kick. Maybe a 1:3:2 ratio. And a little canola oil.

Could see it being incredible late-night drunk food for a group too. Takes 10 minutes start to finish.

What am I, made of money? Also the first sentence of that article you linked was hilarious to me, "One night last week—after five glasses of wine, a deep-fried breaded soft-boiled egg, and a Freudian slip about a man who once fed me a meal consisting only of sprouts—my former employer Rebecca invited me to a breakfast of Dutch babies with her gay husband Jimmy."

Never made Dutch babies before. If they come out good I'll teach women who are looking for gay husbands how to make them.

To go cheap on this and make it multiportion, change the salmon out for canned tuna and add cold cooked rice. Throw in some green lettuce/salad add olive oil and vinegar and you're ready to go.
