I know the internet loves cats so perhaps they might be able to answer my question.

My entire life i'm been very allergic to cats. Itchy skin, watery eyes, rashes, wheezing, sneezing, etc. People who owned cats would sometime trigger my allergies.

I recently moved to a new apartment and this stray cat started showing up at my door, I began feeding it outside and would occasionally pet it without any reaction. As the weather began getting colder I let it in, I've become very attached and now she's a full time resident.

In the beginning I had very slight allergies, but nothing too extreme. Now I have pretty much no allergies at all. I thought I just wasn't allergic to cats anymore, so I been more friendly to other cats, but they all give me an allergic reaction.

I've always been allergic to cats too, but I seem to adjust pretty fast when I'm around the cat a lot (like living with it). My parents have a cat that didn't bother me very much when I lived there but since I moved out I find myself pretty allergic to it when I visit.

I had mild-moderate allergies with dogs/cats but constant exposure to them got me past it. I've not heard of getting used to one animal but being sensitive to others (although it sounds possible).

What was the question though?

We had a cat when I was little. I never had any problems until after the cat died then I became allergic to cats. I could walk into a house and within 10 mins know whether there was a cat or not.

When I got an allergy test the 2 things that reacted immediately were cats and peas. The doctors told me I'd never be able to eat peas again or own a cat. I started getting allergy shots 2 times per week in each arm(4 total shots.) After 2yrs of that they were reduced to 1 shot per week. I went through that **** for about 10yrs and yes, it sucked ass. At least it helped me get over any fear of needles.

I can now tolerate being in a house for a few hours with a cat but I can't let it anywhere near my face and there's no way in hell I could stay over night.

I never got over the allergy to peas. The smell of them cooking makes me gag.

My brother also developed an allergy(worse than mine) to cats after ours died. Since that was his only allergy my parents never had him tested. He got married 10yrs ago and his wife had 2 cats. Somehow they never bothered him and he's able to be around any cat without any problems.

Only thing I can say about it is **** doctors and their bull**** medicine.

Don't cat allergies depend on the kind? I have no problems with domestic shorthairs, for example. But I can stop coughing around ragdolls.

My husband and I both have cat allergies. After rescuing kittens - twice - we learned that there is a period of adjustment with any new cat. Once we are around it enough, casual contact doesn't affect us.

We still can't go rubbing our eyes after petting them, and we love our air purifiers, but our allergies became a non-issue for the most part.

Does anyone have experience with using air purifiers or carbon filters to mitigate allergies to cats?

I've never used one but I've heard other people really recommend them. I also find if we go too long without vacuuming/dusting the house my allergies seem to get worse.

I've heard about this from multiple people - they are allergic to cats, but X cat/breed doesn't bother them for some reason.

For instance, my boyfriend's aunt claims she's allergic to cats but has been in our apartment multiple times and has petted our two Siamese with no issues. She says Siamese don't trigger the allergy, and it seems to be true.

Being allergic to cats (AFAIK) usually means you are allergic to the dander/hair. I grew up with multiple allergies (including, officially, to cats although we constantly had them when I was growing up, and I never had any sort of skin or swelling reaction) and had the allergy shots for several years. You can outgrow allergies for sure, or adjust if you are around a certain allergen for some time.
