I always ****ing hated pushing that damn credit card (or debit) on customers. It was the worst. I swear I only ever got a guest to sign up for one when they actually came in the store to get it so they can save that 5 percent!

DO YOU WANNA SAVE 5 PERCENT TODAY AND HAVE YOUR IDENTITY STOLEN LATER?

Hehe.

Yeh I'm bitter. **** target.
I wouldn't take no for an answer on that damn Red Card. I got people who already had the credit card to sign up for the debit card and vice versa. I think normal "conversion rate" for a cashier was like 2-4% and I was at like 25%

Yea probably not. I was thinking it was better than minimum wage, what I envisioned was something like:

Cashier/floor 1-2 years
Team lead - 1-2 years
Manager 1-2 years
Assistant GM - 1-2 years
GM - 1-2 years

I started working in retail during college.

Took 3 years for me to be a team leader, then one month to be a manager. I was offered the team leader role after one year of working there, but turned it down. Left 6ish months after being a manager.

I suggest you talk to your store manager/HR person about any fast track scheme their company has for eager people like yourself.

EDIT: A good trick to get noticed is to go into other stores in your area and introduce yourself to the manager. Tell him/her which store you work for and if they need any help, you will do some overtime for them. Give them your mobile number. The more store managers you know, the more job opportunities become available. That is how I got a manager job role after one month of being a team leader

At my store, if you get the most red cards by a certain time, you get to carry around a stuffed dog for the rest of the day. How can you put a price on THAT?

Yeah, if you've decided on retail for some reason at least try to get a job at Costco (much better pay, prospects and working conditions than virtually anything else corporate) or if you're actually a good salesman somewhere on commission so you can hopefully do better than minimum wage.

WTF. Get a real job or go to grad school. If you have a real math degree from a real university, you are smarter than 99% of the population.

This too. Why would you be limited to data entry if you got a 9-5 type job?

Grunching, but I love the premise that OOT would be the logical place to go to get Target employee feedback. On that note I'm heading over to POG for some sex advice.

Ha. It was like choosing a president. OOT won out more cause the others lost. Tbh the feedback was even better than I anticipated. The posts here have been funny and very informative.

Yup, real degree, real university. Tbh I can't think of a day job that excites me. I enjoy working with people (a-hole customers excluded), and bigger companies like Target or BB have levels of management I was hoping to make after paying my dues.

I thought of going the s/w eng route cause I enjoy logic puzzles and such, however I fear that path won't meet my extroverted needs. fml

Well, Target's far from the only company where the idea of "working your way up" has disappeared. There just aren't very many middle management positions any more, and previous generations have most of those locked up.

Unless you get on the fast track from the beginning and STAY there by jumping through every hoop they put in front of you, it doesn't matter how smart or talented you are.

So... write an app. Figure out an idea for a start-up. If you are an extrovert, make YouTube videos about writing apps or forming start-ups. Do SOMETHING non-corporate, work some bull**** job to pay the bills, and NOW you have a shot at making it big on your own terms. At the very least you won't be putting in 60+ hours at some job you don't really like.

FWIW I have a B.A. from Harvard in Applied Mathematics... and I'm working at Target so I can pursue my real passions. I'm practicing what I preach.

I would have thought the same thing, but OP has gotten great insight thus far. OOT never fails to surprise me.

not sure you should pick your job based on whether it meets your social needs. plenty of time to be extroverted outside work.

You have a real math degree from a real university and you LIKE working with people. You're like the white buffalo man. Target something better than, Target imo.

I would have suggested at least trying to get into the pharmacy as a technician but with the CVS takeover it's probably best to stay far away.

Ok.

I've never worked at Target but from what I understand it's truly an awful place. One of my exes worked there and they ****ed him royally in a way that not even he deserved.

But don't go to grad school for math just because you have nothing better to do. I have a good friend with a statistics PhD and a "good job" and he's one of the most miserable people I've ever met even though he supposedly did everything right.

It sounds like canned tautology but do what makes you happy and find someone who will pay you for it.

I worked in commission retail for years, in sales and management.

The only way to do retail is own the store. Period.
