MLYLT, have you ever been single for long time? I mean > than a year.

FYI domestic violence is never cool, and it doesn't matter if you manage to actually injure your partner for it to "count". For someone who has vociferously complained about real or perceived gender inequality issues in the work place, you should recognize the hypocrisy and thank your lucky stars that you have let seen the inside of a jail cell for this.

Lack of visible injury is not a defense to battery. Especially domestic.

Got rejected from the company I interviewed with. They said they are pursuing candidates with more experience.

Did they mention experience requirements in the job ad?

On to the next one imo

It was on linked in. They had a list of experience requirements. I matched to the job 100%. I think I asked for too much money or I was a woman.

MLYLT,

Sigh.

Maybe you asked for too much money as a woman. Next time try .70 on the dollar

I had once similar experience. The position was like " We are looking for lapka". And I didn't get it. After that I found out through a friend, who knew someone working there, that they didn't really look for someone. They just kept this position online, because it didn't cost them a penny and to see how the market of applicants is and just in case.
They have rejected not only me, but also some really good guys.

and JIDC might be right. Depends on how much you need a job. I mean I am totally on fight for your rights, but also be realistic.

Yesterday I applied for 10 jobs. One of the companies was actually a client of mine a couple of years ago, and I had a second connection. I was able to email a lady in HR who gave me the direct contact information of the HR person for the position. Should I email or call this person, what should I say to lock up an interview? Calling El Diablo!

I'm curious whether your mental illness or gender is a bigger hurdle in securing employment, in your opinion.

Maybe a softer question would be, "To what extent do you think your soft skills/interviewing skills affect your job-seeking experiences?" But I agree completely. I think there's too much blaming external factors and not enough introspection here. Are there companies that help job candidates improve their interviewing skills, like the companies that help improve resumes? If so, I think MLYLT would really benefit from some mock interviews and a critical post-interview evaluation.

Yes, I know I need help with interviewing! I asked before if anyone would like to do a mock interview with me and give some good feedback here. I think it would be benifictial to a lot of people. Anyone up for a google hangouts interview?

How many female friends do you have? My guess is none. You generally ignore any and all comments or advice from women in any of the threads where you post. Your shrink is male. I think you yourself place little value in relationships with women. And, since you are one yourself, where does that put you?

When you're currently unemployed you've got to set your sights lower salary-wise. Then look to move up by making lateral moves while still employed.

I ended up taking a 10k pay cut from my previous job landing in my current spot.

Sounds like a decent Larry Podcast to me. Possibly.

Also, enough with the women's equality shtick. You're only quoting it when it suits your needs and ignoring it when it doesn't. Some babsian level excuses right there. Extremely hypocritical imo.

I'm certainly not saying you're wrong. Because you aren't wrong.

However:

A) it's not as black and white of an issue as you promote it to be ime and
B) like lapka said, you have to be realistic at some point.

I have read and acknowledged all of Lapkas post. The only other woman I know on here is RJ.
No I don't have women friends other than my sisters. I would say I really only have one true friend that I actually hang out with(it's a guy). I'm pretty much a loner, but that doesn't mean I don't value relationships with people or women. One of my project managers was a woman, we became good friends and I really valued her.

MLYLT,

Email, don't call.

Make it clear in the email that:

- you would like to be considered for the open position
- they used to be your client
- you enjoyed working with them (both the content of the work, and the people you worked with)
- your skills and experience (possibly highlighting specific examples from when they were your client) are a match for the listing

Attach your resume.

I'd say be a bit aggressive with this one, and say something like "I'd love to talk more about the position. Do you have time to talk on Thursday morning or Friday morning?" They might respond that they aren't setting up interviews yet, or something that means the same thing but I think it's a good tactic, which can help you jump the queue and can help you leverage the ~personal connection.

Include your phone number below your name at the bottom of the email.

Mlylt,

Lots of good posts. I agree with most of them except that I don't agree that you need to lower your salary expectations. If you're asking for reasonable market rate compensation, I doubt that'll be an issue (Lapka, jidc was not being serious).

If you and Larry record a mock interview, I'd be happy to listen and give comments.

I'd definitely contact the hr person. "Hi, other HR person mentioned you are the hiring lead for the xxx position I recently applied for. I wanted to reach out directly to let you know I'm especially interested in this opportunity because xxx reason having them as a client and think it's a great fit based on my experience doing xxx with them. I'm very excited to interview for this role, so please let me know if you have any additional questions not covered in my resume/application/cover letter." Something like that.

Well, I'm personally getting a headache reading your posts. You are all over the map. Would you please make a list somewhere of your goals, in order of importance?

New job, New apartment, New location, move vs stay put. Code vs single, weight loss. What is your number one priority?

Can you post the email you sent this person?

Hi Jessica,

Diana mentioned you are the hiring lead for the incoming quality assurance position I recently applied for. I wanted to reach out directly to let you know I'm especially interested in this opportunity because I worked with your compression group on a seawater chiling system for your xxx platform and really enjoyed working with your company and team. My experience is in sizing pumps, heat-exchangers, vessels and natural gas compressors, and I have lead a team of 15 engineers on multi-million dollar offshore skid packages for the Oil&Gas industry. I'm very excited to interview for this role, so please let me know if you have any additional questions not covered in my resume and Linked In Profile. I am available this week if you would like to speak with me.

Best Regards,
MLYLT
