I find this incredibly creepy: A bear that walks only on its hind legs wandering around New Jersey neighborhoods:

Man, no one ever believes me when I say we saw a few bears while growing up in rural north Jersey. Now there's proof!

This could have been a real problem on Halloween.

The part of Jersey the Appalachian Trail runs through might have the most dense population of bears along the trail outside Great Smoky NP.

Bears are like big raccoons, if there is no hunting pressure, and plenty of garbage in suburban areas, they are going to breed and start spreading into those areas. We saw plenty of bears in our deer camp squeezed between farm fields and a huge federal wildlife area. They would come over to get corn and break into the diesel pumps to roll in the fuel, I guess it would make their skin feel better. But once they opened up a limited hunting season on them, quota of 40 from that area, we hardly saw them again, but we knew a few, at healthy population levels, were still around. Our camp never shot a bear, too much trouble to skin them out, meat tastes like ****, and full of trichinella, plus we liked to see them.

When I lived in Chugiak Alaska (within the Anchorage bowl) bears could be shot if your life or property was in danger. No ones life is realistically going to be endangered by a black bear if you are cautious (Brown bears, maybe not so much). Property is another thing.

One day I saw a big fat black bear moseying down my driveway. I thought about what a cool place I lived in that that could happen. Then I went out the front door, and saw it had torn open the shed where we stowed the garbage, and had strewn it 50 yards up and down the hill. I didn't feel quite the same way as I was picking up that stinking crap and then having to bear proof the shed.

This was a big story about a year ago too. I wonder if it is the same bear again. Lots of bears in NJ but not sure how many are bipedal. Pretty awesome to see him walk that fast upright.

I laughed at "I thought Dwayne was in Florida."

Walk like a human, no big deal. Walk like an Egyptian, different story.
