IANAL but things generally do not have to be "deemed legal." They must be legislated against.

Why do you think that this might not be legal? Confidentiality of familial genes?

Earlier I had said that a 13th victim was mentioned, but on reflection, this may have been alluding to Claude Snelling, who was murdered by "the Visalia Ransacker, who authorities claim is linked to Deangelo.

Caught with help from commercial DNA testing sites, though there are few details on this. Fascinating.

The Golden State Killer case was cracked with a genealogy website. What does that mean for genetic privacy?

I feel like those DNA/genealogy testing websites are a black mirror episode waiting to happen. It's frightening that some random company can have a DNA profile for you simply because a relative submitted their DNA.

Disclaimer: I am not a serial killer. But I've toyed with the idea of submitting my DNA to one of these sites to see what comes back, but haven't done so yet. This news makes me far less likely.

I had zero interest in getting my dna tested but I'm more likely to want to do it now to stitch up any bastid relative who may have been doing the wrong thing.

Its astonishing to me that he had the discipline to do it, I suppose its that same type of discipline he used to plan, etc that made him so hard to catch.

Having said that, if my math is right, then has was 40 (72 years old today born in 1946) when he committed his last murder in 1986 so maybe he ran out of gas? Nah, I don't believe it, I think he's committed crimes since then no one has been able to tie him to, I just can't accept he went cold turkey

I wouldn't like to find that out even with all the flaws my dad had. I look a lot like him though so I'd be pretty surprised if I ever found out he wasn't my dad.

if you jump around on wikipedia reading about these serial killers it is amazing how lax sentencing/parole was prior to the prison industrial complex.
