New iWork UI?
01-27-2010 , 03:00 PM
Did they mention anything about if you could dl .epub files without going through the iTunes store and still use them in iBooks?

If I didn't have a Touch already, I would probably snap this up, but I can't see a legitimate niche for this product yet.

That's why this device is pointless. You won't be able to do any actual work on it.

$1000, less with a data plan though.

The NYT app looks slick.
No 3G or any kind of wireless data support (outside of wifi obv) announced yet. And it should've been part of one of the previous point.

It's a nice overpriced gadget by Apple. It's more expensive then a netbook with less functionality. But it's more powerful for media/game stuff.

Whoever said it earlier was right, it's not a tablet computer; it's a giant iPod Touch. It's not even an iPhone. meh.

My laptop has a 17" screen for poker. I don't really enjoy sitting on the couch with the hot thing on my lap, or lugging it all over town.

not everyone has an iphone. perhaps that's the niche?

So they're going for the people that couldn't get the Iphone and decided not to get the Itouch??
01-27-2010 , 03:09 PM
The IWork and IBooks that they are demonstrating are sick. This is not a big IPhone.
01-27-2010 , 03:11 PM
Yeah, they did a pretty good job covering basic word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation applications.

It's obviously not a replacement for a work computer, but it's much better than an iPhone.

And want a bigger screen and don't mind if it doesn't fit in their pocket. And have lots of money.

I think this thing may create it's own niche for gamers and a lot of other people. But it will take a couple years to transform the way people think about their internet devices. I had my iphone for a year before I started using the browser on a regular basis. Now I surf the web constantly on it.

$9.99 for each of the three IWork apps.

Given what Jobs went through the last couple of years, I have a feeling this could be a major gamebreaker in the medical field with the right software.

oh i agree about that for sure, but my 10.1" netbook with an HD resolution screen, 6 cell battery, and SSD is light, thin, quiet, cool, starts up vvvvvfast, and cost me < $300, and i can use actual programs on it, not to mention type out this post with two hands

This is me, have Verizon, and a 160gb Ipod, I carry both 100% of the time, someday I'll get my VZ iphone.

$15/ 250MB of data for a month

$30 unlimited data package.
01-27-2010 , 03:14 PM
Yeah it remains to be seen how typing will work. Need to play with one. I know now even with netbooks I don't really enjoy having to balance the things on my lap. But iPad could be a lot worse. Or possibly better somehow. I do like that you can flip from portrait to landscape, which you can't do on a netbook.

lol 250 mb/month for 3G 15/month

unlimited 30/month

with ATT

Just announced it. 3G data plans are $14.99 for 250MB or unlimited at $29.99.

Free use of AT&T wifi hotspots.

Not great.
01-27-2010 , 03:15 PM
i don't think $600-800 is a lot of money for this thing. they are pricing it correctly. more than an iphone, less than an macbook.
01-27-2010 , 03:15 PM
He keeps talking about AT&T, nothing about Verizon yet...I dont think its coming.

Unlocked GSM yo!
01-27-2010 , 03:16 PM
ah finally, some model will have 3G. I guess I'll wait a little more to pass judgment.

It's really all about the price it will sell at IMO.

Pretty nice data deal for US (because of the no contract/unlocked phone).

$30/month.

any chance they'll allow tethering with it? LOL.

No contract is nice because I could see myself buying it for a month at a time if I'm going to be traveling a lot, but I think a lot of people were hoping for less than $30.

Btw this thing will run iphone apps but ideally should have apps custom-written for its higher resolution. We were offered to be in the pilot program for our app to upgrade it for this, but declined. I'll let someone else blaze the trail, and I don't really see a lot of firefighter trainees running out and buying this thing.
