Realize Dids posted this a while ago... but it is (potentially) very different from fb status updates depending on how you use it.
As a non-celebrity / non-company, I really view Twitter as an informational micro-blogging service on specific business topics that matter to me. So that's usually what I tweet about and who I follow. There is a decent amount of cross-over with my greader, but Twitter is easy enough to check that I find it's 1) not very time consuming; 2) overall incremental to my greader stuff.
Obviously Twitter as a potential marketing / branding channel (for both individuals as well as concerns) is enormous.
Sometimes I tweet personal stuff, but I try to stay away from that it's not really all that useful for me.
I also think DeezNuts is the best twitterer in my follow list.
