In case any of them want to come along. Most of my friends aren't on twitter, but if they were I could see the use in this.

It's funny how the average age on this forum is something like 25 but a lot of you sound like grumpy old men when it comes to twitter. I didn't get IM at first. I couldn't even conceive of a place where it would be useful to anyone other than socializing teenagers. Poker changed that, also my last job used IM pretty effectively. Same with text messaging at first. I'm just wondering if there's any usefulness like that in twitter (other than the movie invite thing).

If it was only two weeks ago that you got sick of it you lasted way longer than most.

I look at twitter as like your facebook status, except that people can't comment back and have it be seen by everyone else. Well I guess they can if they twitter back to the same people. But no one would have the same group of twitter friends.

I hardly ever update my facebook status. But I did when I turned 40 because someone made a comment on my wall (the new Facebook design is kind of sneaky, I didn't even realize I was updating my status, I just thought I was replying). About 25 of my friends, many I haven't talked to in a while, who are scattered all over the globe, saw my status update and made comments. Which actually was kind of nice.

So what I'm getting at is that maybe used judiciously, for special events or milestones, etc. Twitter could bring scattered friends a little closer, keep you connected with each other on a little more intimate basis. IE - the way email changed the whole communication landscape for keeping in touch, and texting changed it somewhat. I can see where it might have an interesting place.

Flame away.

I agree. But media overhype alone doesn't necessarily mean twitter itself sucks.

Right. There's different kinds of twitters I would guess. Famous people who some people actually do care what they're doing all the time. And the rest of us. I'm not quite sure the utility is there for the rest of us (except for the delusional non-famous people who think their friends actually care what they had for breakfast). But I can see the use in casual social hookups.

I just signed up, in large part because this thread reminded me I'd been talking about it for some time.

I think twitter has potential if you're really good at delivering one-liner observations that are funny on their own. I suspect >95% of twitter feeds are pretty terrible to read.

I've been using Twitter for 3 weeks now and I still don't get why it is supposed to be so great.

Hey everyone, I'm hungry and am going to make sandwich now.

TwitterBerry + Facebook status sync = golden just because it's so much faster to update rather than logging onto Facebook/Twitter.com.

Assuming you aren't joking, and also assuming you aren't some sort of musician/artist/Whil Wheaton where it would be in your best interest to keep your fans abreast of your goingsons, why are you updating your friends so often? Is this something that they request, or do you feel that their lives would be enriched by being kept up to date with exactly what you are doing?

Thank feck for this thread.

The twitter concept had me totally lost as in why would anyone want to know the mundane details of my day to day existence.

Given the hype I was assuming I was over the hill and the interwebs was finally beginning to leave me behind to give me my first taste of future shock.

Its good to see I am not alone in my wtf.

I use it, like it, and my rare Tweets are actually pretty good. I have Facebook but I hardly ever use it and have never updated my status ever.

I haven't tried Twitter yet, but my company (large ad agency) set up a group on Yammer, which is basically Twitter, but it's closed to viewing only to your company. I'm not sure what the hell we are supposed to do with it, but we have 1,193 people on it already.

It seems like some of you can't understand the whole "Hey going to meet at xyx brewpub with a,b,c if anyone else wants to meet up" (w/o to contact everyone directly) utility concept of it. You just continue to rail against the "I'm making a sandwich now" concept. I think we all agree that's dumb - probably just new twitterers playing with the medium and something that most non-teenagers will quickly grow out of. I'm more interested in the other utility aspects of it, if there are any.

Realize Dids posted this a while ago... but it is (potentially) very different from fb status updates depending on how you use it.

As a non-celebrity / non-company, I really view Twitter as an informational micro-blogging service on specific business topics that matter to me. So that's usually what I tweet about and who I follow. There is a decent amount of cross-over with my greader, but Twitter is easy enough to check that I find it's 1) not very time consuming; 2) overall incremental to my greader stuff.

Obviously Twitter as a potential marketing / branding channel (for both individuals as well as concerns) is enormous.

Sometimes I tweet personal stuff, but I try to stay away from that it's not really all that useful for me.

I also think DeezNuts is the best twitterer in my follow list.

-Al
