Anyone getting a DROID / ANDROID? Anyone getting a DROID / ANDROID?

Does anyone know how to disable the two-finger rotate gesture on Google Maps? It can get annoying when trying to pinch and zoom since you almost always end up rotating the map as well.

Yes, I know you can touch the compass to arrow to return to the default orientation. But it'd be nice to disable that gesture. Googling hasn't helped me.

Anyone know of a good app/game like Risk? Ideally with multiplayer vs. randoms.

contract is running out with sprint in june (thank god) so I'm considering getting an Android. Is there anything coming out in the summer that is worth waiting for or is the thunderbolt as good as it gets for the time being?

there will be dual core phones released soon (first one or two already released) and that would seem to be a substantial step forward.

Are you looking to move to Verizon or open to other US carriers?

I'm interested to know the same thing. From my experience most people who stay with a cell provider for a few years end up hating them. Main reason being they're all ****ing us pretty bad.

samsung galaxy s 2 seems to be by far the best phone right now (and should still be in a few month). from all i know, it is not announced in US yet, but it will probably be available on all US carrier (the s1 was...) in 2-3 month i'd think. it's already available in some parts of europe and asia. short googling shows no fixed release date in us yet, but most agree that it should appear in us quite soon, sometimes between late may and june.

here the engadget review: http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/28/s...y-s-ii-review/ , really pumped for it...

there were lots of problems with version 1 (but it was still really successful), but the s2 seems to have just everything in place...

Something else to consider is how much you want to really mess around with your phone. If you're comfortable with rooting your phone and flashing custom ROMs and that's something you want to do, then you also want to consider which phones are more hacker-friendly.

HTC phones, in general, tend to be more hacker-friendly then Samsung and Motorola phones. It's not true across the board, but it's generally true.

But yeah, if you don't want to mess around with that and you just want a phone that works really well right out of the box, then phones like the aforementioned Galaxy or the other upcoming dual-core phones (that aren't HTC) might be a better choice than the Thunderbolt.

Either way, I'd wait until your contract is actually up. New phones come out and release dates change so frequently that the correct answer right now probably won't be the correct answer in two months.

Seems alright but I'm surprised a lot of Android phone makers aren't using qHD... 800x480 is pretty small imo compared to 960x640 (that being Apple's iPhone 4 resolution... qHD is 960x540 for reference).

Anyone know how to get Android 2.3 on Droid X?
05-05-2011 , 06:11 PM
A quick X-Post. For those that don't know there's a new Programming Subforum on 2p2. I've started an Android development discussion thread there.

I don't have a Droid X so I can't vouch for this but you may want to check it out.

My Verizon Blackberry is on its last legs. Probably making the jump to iPhone/DROID.

I tweet/text/facebook about 99% of the time on my Berry, but that may be just because I'm limited to what kinds of apps I can use.

What's the DROID phone I should be targeting here? Does it matter?

How long can you wait? There are apparently some dual-core phones coming out soon that will be a huge increase on the phone market we have now. I guess Thunderbolt is the best phone out in USA now, at least the last time I looked into them.

If I can get this BlackBerry working again (maybe got it moist/water damaged), then I can wait a few months.

If not, probably ASAP.

Put it in rice. Seriously.
05-08-2011 , 11:16 PM
The whole thing? With the battery out? How long should I leave it there?
05-08-2011 , 11:40 PM
Yeah, the battery should've been taken out right away. Leave it for 12-24 hours.

Doing browsing online and it sounds like this is a somewhat common problem.

My water damage indicator on my battery is completely fine and everything, just the keyboard won't respond.

Today's free app of the day from the Amazon store is gentlealarm - highly recommend it as a multifunctional alarm clock.

this is a sweet app, worth paying every cent even if it wasn't free today. very customizable and the pre-alarm function works wonders - basically it plays a much quieter version of your alarm sound file for x minutes beforehand so the full volume alarm doesn't jolt you out of deep sleep. well at least that's the theory anyhow. i'm getting pretty good results so far.
