Whats everyones take: with caller ID these days, do you answer your calls with the callers name or do you use a generic "hello" or do you specialize your greeting.

Thought crossed my mind the other day at work when I had to call a fella a couple times during the day and he always generically answered his phone. Yet when I get a call from someone 'regular' I tend to greet that person. This is on my cell or desk phone.

Did you just use the word fella?

I don't answer the phone. Like, ever. If a caller leaves a message, I usually listen to it right away and then decide whether to call them back immediately, later, or never.

Depends on who the caller is. Usually use the person's name if I know them.

Usually say "This is Josh" if I don't know the number.

I always just say hello, hadn't ever really thought about it. Maybe I'll start personal greetings now though.

"Hello?" is my standard answer, even if I know who it is. if I was just talking to someone or I know what it's about I might say "Hey, what's up"

I do this too. I very rarely answer my phone unless im like waiting for the call or something. Drives my friends crazy to no end.

To comment on the op, I always say hello but the tone in my voice definitely differs depending on who is calling.

Who is "call?"

God I hate people like you, though I rarely answer the phone when I don't recognize the number...

I voted for all four because I could.

"Hey [name]/dude, what's up?"
12-08-2008 , 11:07 PM
Totally situational. I don't like saying the person's name, but some people get a "hello" and some people get a "yoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo" or a "what time it is".

I was watching football the other day and somebody said "fellas" and I thought to myself "wow that is a word I will never use".

i usually say speak or who dis

Always going to voice mail is essentially a text message, right?

And I have no clue why you'd ever answer a number you don't recognize.
12-08-2008 , 11:12 PM
Do you let it ring through to voicemail, or do you send it there directly?

yeah, if I don't know they number they leave a message. If they don't leave a message then they'll never speak to me. If they do leave a message, I'll usually only pick up next time they call; I'm pretty bad at calling back after voicemails.

I send it to voicemail. Why would I want my phone ringing and shaking and everything when I could just stop it?

my voicemail message literally is:

leave me a message or i will assume your call wasnt important and not call you back, just so i can not answer it.

then about 90% of the time i will only send a text back
12-08-2008 , 11:27 PM
I always just answer the phone by saying "yeah"

why wouldn't you? what if its something important?

For instance, I think its probably a good impression to be able to pick up a call from people calling me after I interviewed for a job who are calling to tell me what the next step of the process is. I'd also hate to miss one of those phone interviews from the unknown number.

Another one that would be less common, but pretty important would be answering a call from a friend or family member calling from jail. I'd feel like a pretty big douche if I missed a friend's call who needed me to bail him out of jail.

They'll leave a message, imo.
