One thing that I have neglected to mention which isn't really all that relevant but needs to be said anyways. The only other problem we've had living with each other all year is that he often pisses all over the toilet seat and refuses to flush when he just pisses. I've asked nicely multiple times, I've told him to go **** himself multiple times, but he continues to do it on a pretty regular basis. He doesn't piss all over the seat on purpose, but just won't lift it up to piss and doesn't care. For someone with lots of phobias, he's a pretty gross guy sometimes.

Did his piss cause you to have a panic attack? If not, nobody cares.

Should've asked him first, and I think he has the right to ask you to get rid of it. Not his fault you spent $180 bucks on the thing. It'd be a different story if he was just doing it to be a douche but he clearly isn't as he even offered to cover some of the cost (which I don't think he had any need to do) I could see something like this giving him problems sleeping etc even if they aren't reasonable fears.

And although the pissing on the seat thing is irrelevant, could get a small win out of it if you ask him to do you a favor and lift the seat since you are being nice about the spider thing.

if one of my roommates did this, i would ****ing lose it on them, especially if they didn't ask

really though, unless everyone you're living with has ZERO problem with this, you shouldn't keep it around. i can be an ******* for a roommate, but even i wouldn't subject someone to that kind of punishment if they are that afraid of something.

He is going to eat some of the costs. ****, good on him and that makes him instantly likeable and makes me think the phobia is for real.

You are at fault for not informing the people you live with that you are getting a big ass pet spider. Id want to know and tbh i dont have any phobia and would prob say yes.

Get rid of it. You are 100% in the wrong and its irrelevant how much you spent on it or what habits he may have that are annoying etc.

Edit, and you are douchier than you already are if you actually make him cover some of the costs YOU outlaid for YOUR pet. Esp as you arent even allowed it in the first place as part of your rental agreement.

Finally US colleges are super weird making people share bedrooms. I havent shared a bedroom in my life and i didnt start when i went to uni.

Does your school give the roommates of a student that commits suicide any special grading considerations? If so that should probably enter the calculus when deciding what to do next.

I don't really see the problem if you're not going to take it out of the cage and he doesn't share a room with you. With that said, I hate spiders and if that thing got anywhere near me I would crush the life out of it.

I know this is a small sample size but everyone I've evern known who's owned a spider (2) was a huge tool. I'd move.

Clearly this, it's not cool for you to just be imposing animals on people, but he sounds like a pusser.

If you got caught with the spider by the wrong person, could it cause you all to lose your lease?

You should sit him down and explain to him that his fear is misplaced. Show him these articles

http://www.darwinawards.com/darwin/darwin1996-05.html

http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSTRE56067K20090701

http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=344_1224831124

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/news...n-Caracas.html

Then explain to him that he is much more likely to be killed by the python than your spider. Once he realizes that a deadly animal lives above him you'll both have a good chuckle, and the issue will obviously be solved. Now for the toilet peeing issue your best play is to put the either the python or the tarantula in the toilet. After he sees one of them pop out while he is peeing, I doubt he will ever want to use that bathroom again.
