You are correct that this isn't relevant. You are incorrect that this needed to be said. This does nothing for your argument. You bringing up this completely unrelated point makes you look particularly bad actually.

However, you can probably use this stupid tarantula thing as leverage and tell him that you'll get rid of it if he agrees to stop pissing all over the toilet-seat.

this is so standard, I never think to lift up the seat and if I get piss on it will usually just wipe it off with toilet paper. and if its yellow let it mellow yo. and buying a ****ing spider makes you a tool.

Phobias can suck. I'm scared of heights (can climb tall things like a lighthouse but can't leave the center wall and my stomach starts flipping, etc) and have little control over how it feels. If his feeling about spiders is something like that then imo it is pretty terrible to keep it. Not asking everyone was a pretty big oversight for that specific pet, which is clearly nothing like a lizard or fish, but I guess I can see why you would only ask the person staying in your actual room.

By "snakes," did you mean cocaine?

I'd go with knivesout's plan, it sounds solid.

Haha.

"And oh yeah...he has these really stupid sunglasses that he wears a lot which look really bad on him and he doesn't dress that great. He's also really lousy at X-Box. And who the f doesn't like Oreos? That's just weird. Basically, I don't like him. And I'm a better person than him because I like Oreos like normal people therefore he should be forced to accept my weird craving to own a tarantula in spite of his genuine phobia."

I think the roommate's post about the situation would garner more support than yours. Having a spider in a terrareum (sp?) is pretty low on the lathe-scale of roommate doucheness; but not asking your roommates before getting it is just foolish.

Put it up on Craigslist - you could probably recoup most of your losses that way (and he can pay half of what you are short).

OP - you keeping the spider will (presumably) seriously diminish your friend's peace of mind in his own home while benefiting you in some relatively minor, "aesthetic" way. Minor positive for you. Huge negative for him. He's even offered to cover part of the cost. If it really takes you much thought here, then I think we know who the selfish douche is.

Getting a potentially scary pet without consulting suite mates = thoughtless
Keeping the pet after suite mate makes it clear this is ****ing his ability to live there = douchebag *******

I recently got a tarantula for my room, and one of my suitemates has freaked out about it.

A little backstory about him. He is not a nervous person, but has some weird hang ups and the occasional anxiety attack. He's been off and on Xanax for years (none of which he ever shares with me btw), and sometimes stresses out easily. He is, apparently, also deathly afraid of spiders.

When he found out that there was a tarantula in my room, he supposedly had a panic attack and had to pop a couple pills to calm down. We talked about it last night, and he essentially told me that I had to move it to one of our mutal friend's room within the next couple of days, or else he would tell the RA that I had it (our school thinks we're all still 15 and doesn't allow us to have any pets in our rooms aside from fish, but this rule is constantly broken, including said mutual friend who has a ball python in his room).

I have multiple issues with this demand. First and I believe most importantly, it's not his room. He hardly ever comes in anyways, so he would never have to see it. Second, the entire set up, spider and all, cost ~$180. He told me that if I move it he'll be willing to eat some of the cost, but I can't imagine it being more than half, and that sort of defeats the purpose of buying a tarantula. Third, I've owned various exotic pets before, including spiders, and have never had any escape. The cage has a latching screen, along with many heavy objects on top of the screen itself. This spider is in prison. Finally, none of my other suitemates have any prpoblems with it, including my roommate.

Some of our mutual friends have told me I'm being a huge dick because it's a "medical condition" that I'm messing with, while others (including my roommate) think that it's not any of his business. So what do you guys think?

Cliffs: I buy tarantula, suitemate throws a fit and demands I get rid of it.
I am deathly afraid of spiders also. If I were him, I would walk over to the spider's cage, grab a book, and smash that bitch into pulp.

Then I would be like, "Dude, not cool. Spiders are not permitted here."

If you got obtained another one. Repeat as necessary.

Chances are, the situaltion would escalate until I would have to beat your ass. That would suck for you. I am just saying....

edit: The fact that you are posting this leads me to believe you are a douche that KNEW that he was scared of spiders and only got the spider to **** with him.

I mean, who the **** wants a spider around???

And yes, you do deserve to have your ass beat.

Boy there sure are a lot of pussies in OOT who are afraid of spiders yet are super hardcore in threatening to "beat [my] ass" if the situation occurred.

Wow, I can't believe the irrational backlash over this guy doing what he wants in his own room. Basically he has a hobby or possession which his roommate is cool with, which will never leave his room, and which serves no danger to anyone. Why is it anyone else's business? And catering to this guy's phobias is a complete disservice. He'd be better off confronting and getting over his fears so he doesn't have to go through life popping xanax every time he sees a bug.

I could see this as a douche move if you knew your suitemate had a huge fear of spiders and you did this to antagonize him.

It is unfortunate that you have a roommate who is extremely scared of tarantulas because you happen to have one. However, it would also be very unfortunate for You if your roommate have a cockslapper (yes it is an animal that only likes to slap your cocknballs really hard when you are asleep) in his room. Clearly, the best for both of you is for you to remove your tarantula and he to remove his cockslapper.

A tarantula's bite is no worse than a bee sting.

Tell him he's a pussy and to grow the **** up.

With that said, you still should have asked everyone if it would be OK to get the spider.

Yeah those people with phobias just need to man up and deal. Same thing as those people who have "bipolar" disorder, everyone knows they are just drama queens and should grow up.

I think the best solution is to help him get over his fear.

Slowly show him that tarantulas are nothing to be afraid of, educate him. He will definitely be resistant at first, but overcoming a fear isn't a walk in the park, it takes mental work. If it all works out, he will be thankful. If not, just sell it.

if he ends up making you get rid of it and youre gona lose the thing anyways, just set it free in the wild (unless you can sell it? lol) and let him come home to find an empty cage and be like wtf where is my spider!?

finally the correct answer. jesus it sounds like 90% of this thread would want OP to disclose to the 'suitemates' if he had a handful of playboy magazines under his bed.

with the dude so incredibly freaked out i guess i'd be forced to get rid of it, but this is hardly an 'i told you!!!' justification that OP should have notified everybody. the odds of one of the suitemates being this insane seem like 1 in a 1000 at best.

He wasn't obligated to notify the roommates out of courtesy, but he should have in order to not waste $180 on a ****ing pet bug, since there was a decent likelihood he'd have to get rid of it anyway.

$180 on a bug really seems like the creepiest, weirdo waste of money I've ever heard of. Should have donated it to Haiti imo.
