What's the best revolver for me? I need it for:

1. Occasional concealed carry.

2. Home defense.

3. Backpacking; would need to deter a black bear.

Trying to spend under $600.

Raging Judge Magnum. I think it's technically a handgun.

Going to be tough for 1 revolver to meet all 3 of these needs. closest would be a mid-size .357 mag, but it might be hard to conceal. smith/wesson or ruger would be where I would look first. Maybe OOT isn't the best place to ask either

For the bear I want minimum .357 mag.
Put it in a gun small enough for concealed carry and you get a gun that's not much fun to shoot.

How about a Glock in 10MM?

why do you want a revolver?

To "deter" a bear? You think the bear will flee if you show him you've got a gun?

(And I thought black bears were the nice ones?)

Sig Sauer P226.

Go for .40 caliber probably.

I'm assuming you wrote revolver just meaning pistol and don't want an actual wheel gun.

i'd suggest a smith & wesson M&P .45 (assuming you dont actually want a revolver)

(it'd need to be compact for concealed carry)

really though I'd say get a Smith-Wesson M&P Shield in 9mm FMJ not hollow point. better for concealed carry, works for home defense (load with hollow point)....you'll never find an aggressive black bear but if you do you should survive with 75% of your limbs with this.

Worry about the first two topics. You're more likely to shoot yourself in the foot trying to get the gun out of your backpack that to actually be attacked by a black bear while hiking.

S&W .380 Bodyguard. Has a built in laser so if you need to put one in a bear close range you aren't missing. Got mine for $450.

Black bears are the crazy ones. They sometimes do things that make no sense, like attack humans.

A .357 Magnum is marginal for a bear if he decides to attack. The best compromise I can think of for these widely divergent requirement is the Smith & Wesson Mountain Revolver. It's .44 Magnum and recoils a lot because of it's light weight, so you gotta practice with it. A lot.

Not gonna get a black bears attention? I'm no bear expert, but I think just about any handgun is gonna do well against a black bear. They tend to be roughly human sized. And even being more thickly muscled and differently proportioned than a human, I have to imagine that unloading on a black bear is gonna put it down.

Against a 500lb+ grizzly tho... I think we want a high powered rifle and a lot of distance between us and the bear to come out even remotely close to alive

From what I've read, bear spray is more likely to prevent injury/death than a gun in most cases. So your first choice for bear protection shouldnt be a gun anyway...
