If you have never heard of this company, they come to your place and take away your stuff that you don't want. The catch is they charge you to do it - and not a nominal fee either - they wanted to charge me about $100 to take away a TV and console. A significant amount of stuff would cost 100s. I called Salvation Army and they did it for FREE.

And it's not like the SA is not everyhwere - ntm all the other charity places who come get your stuff.

So who uses this company?? There might be a small difference between them and the SA in that 1800 will come inside your house, but that's not much value imo to justify a business. But I read that the company was actually a good franchise opportunity.

Here's a complaint I found:

Quote:
They charged me $154 to remove a single 3 cushion couch measuring 7'x3'x3' off my friend's FRONT PORCH!!! That's more than i paid for the couch!! I would have told them to piss off but it had to be moved and i couldn't do it in time for repairs that needed to be done to the porch. Never in my wildest dreams did i even imagine that it would be that much to move a d**n couch. It would have taken a disabled turtle one minute to pick this thing up and load it in the truck. they charged me $154!!! I doubt that took up much space in the truck, let alone 1/8. Then they wrote on the receipt that it took 10 minutes!!! what are they doing, taking a coffee break??? No way. These guys suck. Their price scale is flawed hardcore.
So what's the deal? Who keeps these guys in business?

The price is agreed to before the item is loaded. Next time strap it to the roof of your car and drive it to the landfill.

I've put a $20 broken fan (labeled with post-it that says "broken") on my curb before and it was gone in a couple of hours.

On my street if you put something like a sofa on the curb it will be gone in under 24 hours. Scavengers salvage stuff and resell it for a profit.

I've also used freecycle.com to give stuff away, it's useful. College kids will take anything.

First, Salvation Army doesn't take real junk, only stuff they can sell. So, there's one difference.

Second, this would probably be a great business because A) you can charge morons an assload to move stuff and B) you can sell the useful stuff for extra profit.

Anyone who contracts for services without checking pricing first is an idiot.

In related news, I'm looking forward to getting the bill next week for my first physical doctor's exam in ten years.

I saw this business on MSNBC or CNBC, it seemed like the draw of the company was the "professionalism", since the trucks are supposedly nice and all the workers wear uniforms.

Frankly I dont see why you want a trash hauler to be professional, maybe if they are going into an office its better than some grungy landfill dude.

I bet if you caught the garbage guys and gave them each $20 they would haul a lot of **** for you.

Of course hiring them to remove one item is ******ed and is not going to be worth it. Did the person who hired them to remove a couch really think a company is going to charge less than $100 for a job requiring 2 guys and probably a decent amount of driving time? My aunt hired these guys to clean out her 85 year old aunt's house, which she had lived in for 50 years and was completely filled with total junk. All of the stuff was too crappy for the Salvation Army's standards. I'm not sure how much they charged, but it was probably worth it. Cleaning out an entire house filled with **** and renting a dumpster would be a huge pain in the ass.

I've put some gps tracking units in them a while back so I got to see them work for a couple days. They do make a decent amount and like said before, they make the majority of their money from cleaning out houses and old businesses. Then they resell everything in one way or another. Not a bad business.

Yea I don't get it at all. I see their trucks here in Shreveport, but I don't see how they do any business as it's 100% standard to put any unused junk out on the street corner with the trash cans. Furniture, TVs, beds, it doesn't matter. There's a whole bunch of people that go street by street every Sunday night seeing what people threw out and picking up the stuff they want for free. Got rid of two couches, an entertainment center and a washing machine this way. It's there at night and gone in the morning (or in the case of the washing machine before I can even walk back inside).
