I posted in the new to poker forum figured this is a better place to ask

I appreciate any insight from the forum. I've googled the question and reached out to some players and the responses have been mostly Harrington and Jonathan Little. Also, with any lists there are usually posts about "new" school vs "old" school strategy and what works in todays game.

What are some good titles that really helped shape/build a strong foundation for your game today?

What titles are out there for both?

That brings me to my next question of cash/tourney strategy and skills. Ill post in another thread.

I can only speak for tournaments. I have about 25 tourney books and if I had to pick one, it would be J Little´s Excelling at No Limit Holdem, which is also helpful for cash players. It really depends on how much experience you have already.

Thanks for the title. I definelty fall in the beginner category. Have read Harrington and the Green book for intro into strategy. Any books that stand out for a beginner?

I remember a Gus Hansen interview about 10 years ago where he said that books are a good way to learn, but just as important is to actually play and learn as you go. The only tourney book for beginners that comes to mind is Kill Phil, which is by the same author as Kill Everyone.

Tournament Hold'em, Hand by Hand

By Neil Myers

A very good beginners book on tournaments, especially the difference in tournament play vs. cash game play + the adjustments to one's play needed to be successful at tournament Hold'em.

In no particular order...

1. Aplications of NLHE
2. Kill Everyone
3. The Mental Game of Poker 1 and 2
4. Essential Poker Math
5. Expert HU NLHE 1 and 2

This is a very good list. I would add the theory of Poker to it.

Also maybe just consider that playing low stakes and posting hands/thinking about hands yourself is a better way to learn.

Books often are too general in their advice or outdated (None of the above are). But also books don't always directly translate well to the games you are playing.

So yeah play hands, post them on 2p2, ask lots of questions. Also invest in some poker software such as pokertracker 4.

Moorman's Book of Poker and the 3-volume Winning Poker Tournament (One hand at a time)
- first time I looked at the game differently.

Was looking at older threads and came across this. For foundational books, I would look at Theory of Poker, Psychology of Poker, and Inside The Poker Mind. The first for strategy and the other two for mental aspects.
